A Problem Downloading ZIP Files

Postby PCUser » Thu 29 Jan, 2004 8:50 am

Hello,

Everytime I downloaded any kind of file, Netscape used to show me a small window giving me the option to select what action to perform (Open it with..., Save it to disk, etc).
A few days ago I downloaded a ZIP file but because this process was always repetitive I forgot to check the "Always show this dialog before handling files of this type" checkbox. It was too late when I realized my mistake so instead of saving the file to my hard disk the Download Manager downloaded the file and then ran WinZip.
Since then, everytime I want to download a ZIP file, Netscape now runs WinZip when all I want to do is just save the file in my computer.
I want to set this mistake back to its default so that Netscape again asks me what to do before downloading ZIP files.
I hope someone has a solution to this issue since I have been looking inside Netscape Properties and I have not seen anything that could set that back.

Best Regards,

Miguel

If you bothered to look in the preferences, you'd know that you look under Preferences -> Navigator -> Helper Applications to change the behaviour of what Navigator does when downloading files of a specific type. This is also explained in the Netscape/Mozilla help files that are included with the browser.

Lots of people forget to use the Help files, so don't feel bad. Netscape and Mozilla have extensive Help fies and it is well worth your time clicking Help | Help Contents and looking through the information already available to you.

That being said:

I don't know about Netscape 7.1 but Mozilla 1.6 Help was somewhat outdated, referring to a "Reset" button that doesn't exist on the Navigator, Helper Applications preference screen.

In case you couldn't figure out how to edit the filetype for ZIP files so that they are either saved to disk, or Netscape asks what to do before opening, try this (applies to Mozilla 1.6... should be similar in NS7.1)

In Edit Preferences Navigator Helper Applications, select the filetype for .zip files
(for example, I show: application/x-zip-compressed for WinZip file, extension ZIP)
and then click the EDIT button.

That will allow you to switch from opening the zip files to "save to disk". There is also a checkbox for the "always ask" option.

The problem may occur with Internet Explorer, as well, if nothing is found in the Helper Apps. My NS7.1 is totally empty, and if the files would start opening, there is an even lesser well known box. The Open with box, accessible from .zip file in Windows Explorer. Going to WinZip, it might show the always open when WinZip is checked. Whenever in doubt, uncheck.

The box in Windows Explorer's View options Filetypes for WinZip (when you click the EDIT button) is "confirm open after download" and it IS checked on my W95B system. Here is what I found on that (not sure if it applies to Win2k/WinXP though):

Eduardo,

For a "regular" file type (like zip), usually you can re-activate this
dialog without direct registry edits --

Open Windows Explorer then go to
View | Folder Options | File Types tab | <select your file type> then
press the 'edit' button on the first edit page there is a check box
for 'confirm open after download' that needs to be marked.
