Real networks has become nuts.

Hi,
Real networks has become nuts.
They want people to download a beta release.
It is for windows 98 Second Edition and above they cut off 98 first edition but left NT 4.0.
Does Windows Media Player support real formats?
I am thinking about going this direction now.

Edited by Admin,
The past participle of "become" is "become."

Windows Media does not support Real formats. Real had released a plugin which will allow RealPlayer to play Windows Media files, however.

If it's an OS that is no longer supported, then why should Real (or any other company) make its product compatible?

Norton AntiVirus no longer supports Windows 95.

For the people who still use it.

I totally agree with Edward, why should Real Networks support old operating systems that Microsoft does not support? Secondly, they want people to download the beta version to test it. Just the same reason we download alpha and beta versions of Mozilla, to test them.

Finally, this is being moved to the Windows forum, as we are discussing a product that runs on Windows.

This is a link to a Cnet.com News story regarding Microsoft support for Windows 98.

According to the article, 25% of web surfers still use Windows 98, which in my opinion, is a very large group.

The article references a support CD that will be available from Microsoft.

Hi,
That is nice so they will still support it but not directly.

I believe it is all in the numbers.

Had the Windows 98 group been a lot smaller, then I doubt Microsoft would have gone to the trouble to release the CD.

The CD is for Windows 98 and Windows ME, and possibly Windows 95. It just contains all the critical patches etc, and probably the latest versions of WMP, IE, Direct X etc.

That is generally the purpose of releasing beta software.

Hi,
I know that.
But they want us to download it with very little saying that it is beta.
That is my problem.

That is true, if they want to promote the beta of RealPlayer 10 so that people will test it, that's great. But they should also equally show links for the previous stable (Non Beta) version.

Hi,
Yes they should.
The first day they were promoting it they had it at the very bottom of the page.
That page is now gone.

Hi,
It appears that they are also changing the browser user-agent string even when I use Internet explorer standalone. (not in the real player)
Pretty strange.
