Kate,
there are so many suggestions that you must be going crazy.
What akbash said is fine, and, I, personally, was never implying that you had a Master Password problem. But, if a box with your username does not come up asking you for a password, then the password must be stored in some way or other.
I would go to the Comcast website, and change the password. You should be prompted.
No, wiping out a profile before having the new one working does not make sense. There is a number of files which can be used by Netscape or Mozilla. I mean create a profile, and use it only for Mozilla. I would do that before getting anything else done with it. Just set up your Comcast mail, and see what happens.

  1. Edit Menu -> Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Passwords -> Manage Stored Passwords. Remove your mail account passwords. I hope you have them memorized.
  2. Next, Edit Menu -> Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings -> Server Settings, and be certain "Check for new messages every XX minutes" is unchecked.
  3. Don't try to access your mail for an hour or so.
  4. Then, try and read your mail.
This isn't quite the same thing that I recommended earlier, but it may be close enough.

Thanks. :) I had tried that already, though, after reading one of the other threads here on what I thought was a similar topic.

Well guys, I'm screwed anyway. I was in Edit Mail & Newsgroups for what seemed like the thousandth time, looking for anything I might have missed, and accidentally clicked Remove Account. Wiped out everything, all my e-mail folders with stored mail. I know they may still be on the computer somewhere (and if you know where, please tell me), but right now I'm depressed and angry at myself.

I'm also bummed because I had just tried Fulvio's suggestion of changing my comcast password, and while that didn't help (and while I had been looking in Edit after that was when I accidentally deleted the account), I went back in and set up a new account with the new comcast password and I am STILL getting the BAD PASSWORD pop up box.

Merely removing an email account does not destroy its messages. See http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns7lostprofwinxp.html for instructions on recovering your account with its mail. Follow the instructions after the line "If you don't have a backup copy of the prefs.js file, try this." By this point you'll have a bunch of unused account directories stored in your user profile that you may want to delete someday, but I say leave that for later. But now may be a good time to make a backup of your profile, along with the email it contains.

So what happens if you make a whole new profile, and set up all your mail and browsing settings again from scratch? That's guaranteed to clear out any preferences or settings that may have somehow gone awry.

Okay guys, things are almost all better! I d/l the complete Mozilla, my mail is all fixed, imported my bookmarks and address book, I am almost happy. :)

I just have to get my stored mail from the old profile, and I see that akbash has some links for me. Thank you. :) I'l let you know how it all goes.

Gah, what a relief to have a real e-mail program again rather than that awful comcast webmail!

Thanks again to all of you for your extreme patience with me, who does not retain this stuff well, obviously. :D

So... the link/advice from akbash worked, technically, but was not what I needed exactly. I could see that my old stored mail was still in my old profile, but I didn't want to access it through Mozz since it's said not to share profiles between Mozz and Netscape. So I reinstalled Netscape and bingo, everything works fine in the mail program now. So all I really needed to do from the beginning was uninstall and reinstall Netscape. :D Jeeze.

So I sent most of my stored e-mail from the Netscape profile to the Mozz profile, and that took a while. Since I can't find a way to forward a bunch of mail at one time (seems one at a time is the only way), I had to forward many, many letters to myself. Pain in the ass, but it's all done. I'm going to leave Netscape on for now until I get sick of Mozz asking me which profile I want to use, then I'll do a full uninstall and wipeout of Netscape and its profile.

Mozz looks and acts exactly like Netscape, so no difference there. It was a bit of a pain to redo Password Manager, but that didn't take as long as forwarding all those e-mails. :D

Thanks again to everyone for your help. :)

Kate, what you could have done, was copy the Mail folder from the Netscape Profile, to the Mozilla Profile.
Rename the Mozilla Mail Folder XMail
Then paste the Netscape Mail Folder, in the Mozilla salted (*.slt) folder

Open Mail & NG Accounts Settings | Server Settings
In the "Local directory" field, ensure that the path points to the Netscape Mail Account Folder, which you just moved into the Mozilla salted folder.

I'm going to leave Netscape on for now until I get sick of Mozz asking me which profile I want to use, then I'll do a full uninstall and wipeout of Netscape and its profile.

To bypass the Profile Manager each time you click on the Mozilla icon, do this:
Right click on the Mozilla Desktop shortcut
Select "Properties" from the context menu
Click on the "Shortcut" tab
In the "Target" field, add to the end of the target path:
<space> -p kate (only using "kate" as an example, use your own username)
The next time you click on Mozilla's Desktop shortcut the browser will open to your Mozilla Profile without asking.

If you want to eliminate the splash screen, then after the -p kate, add one space after kate, and enter -quiet. Your Target will then look similar to this:
"C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\mozilla\mozilla.exe" -p kate -quiet

Thank you, Ramona. :)

I understand why you're telling me all this, but I have to tell you (in case it isn't already painfully obvious :D) that what I did was so much easier for me cos it involved forwarding a bunch of e-mail rather than delving into files and folders about which I know little to nothing. I don't retain such things well and tend to get nervous while messing around in the guts of the computer if I'm not 100% sure of what I'm doing. It's best that people like me never go to certain places in the computer.

I appreciate all you guys have done, and your patience. Thanks so much! :)

Hi Kate,

You just go ahead and do whatever you find the easiest, and accomplishes what it should.

We are open 24/7.
But, it can be tough to diagnose problems, especially when I am not familiar with the type of mail.
And, I got around my authentication of Sent messages. To my great satisfaction messages are sent from Moz1.7.1 and TB0.7.2, but they are not in OE, their gold standard.
I have no clue what did the the trick.
