HELP with Mozilla & Win ME

Postby Vic1ca » Wed 25 Feb, 2004 9:28 pm

I have an old computer, HP Pavilion 8180, 233MHz, 128 RAM.. I went from Win 98 to Win ME and I HATE it. I dislike all the garbage that comes with it and nothing works.. I haven't had any sound on my computer since I loaded Win ME.
So, here's my problem... I ordered Win 98SE to replace Win ME. But in the mean time I downloaded Mozilla 1.7 to see if I like it better. I just want something simple without all the advertisement, weather, and such. It was fine until I did this... I removed OE because it has never worked. Then I removed MSN Explorer which was a drain and a pain on my computer. Now I have IE left. Since I removed the two programs, now when I click on the Mozilla icon, up pops Netscape with all the advertisements and junk that I don't want. Can I get rid of this or do I have to have Netscape?

Another thing...I made Mozilla my default mail program but my mail is going to MSN hotmail account. Some of my email is going to who knows where...I can't find it. If I use mozilla email, am I suppose to change something on my email addy? As you can see, I'm not sharp at all with this stuff. I just need it simple and easy to use and free from clutter.

Can anyone help me get this system on the right track?

Thanks
Vic

In my opinion you should have listened to anything you ever heard anyone say about WinMe. It WAS absolutely a marketing ploy to finance development of XP and in essence - Win98 on acid. You seem to have a plethora of disasters occuring simultaneously and until you're ready to upgrade to a machine running XP I would seriously consider reformatting your drive and reinstalling 98SE, you'll be much better off.
Until you have some more stronger processor muscle I would also recommend you hold off on Mozilla 1.x or Netscape 7.x as you will not be able to enjoy the full effect of what it has to offer and it will leave you frustrated and twiddling your thumbs.
WinMe does come with an uninstall but I would not recommend that as it will more than likely leave you with having to reformat your drive anyways as well. IF you've had WinMe installed long enough to have any Restore points established you might try going to System Restore and go back to your earliest point after installing Me and start all over with everything up to that point. A longshot, but I've seen longshots work before - try that first perhaps, much simpler than reformatting your drive altogether and reinstalling 98SE.
Best bet? Put some money back and go with an XP Emachine from Best Buy or, push comes to shove, rent to own an XP Dell from RAC or an Aaron's, wait for tax refund - terminate your lease early, then go to Best Buy. ALL of this new stuff coming out simply requires more muscle.
