7.1 --dial up--lost mail

Postby ned » Mon 15 Mar, 2004 2:28 pm

I have 7.1 installed with a dial up connection to my ISP. When downloading messages from the ISP, if the connection to the ISP is lost, then apparently all of the messages that were in the original count that have not been downloaded were deleted from the ISP server. When I connect again, I cannot download the messages I missed since they are no longer on the server. For example, if I hit get message and the downloading begins with 20 messages total, and the connection is lost after receiving the first 5 messages, then I cannot retrieve the other 15 messages once the connection is established again. When the connection is lost, netscape hangs (sometimes gives me the message "processing folder"), and I have to close netscape.

You are using 7.01 to post. Are you referring to 7.1 or you lost a decimal point? My suggestion is that you try Netscape4.8, until we figure out what is going on. The messages should not be deleted from the server, unless you did not set up to leave messages on server. Check your mail and news server settings. You may also want to remove your account, and then add it back. You can, easily, rename whatever is left of your old inbox, copy and then paste in the new account. If you do this, have Netscape closed.

I am using Netscape 7.1, not Netscape 7.01. The basic problem is that Netscape "get mail" hangs when the dial up connection is lost during the middle of getting mail. Settings are to delete from server after download. When it hangs, I can view Netscape mail folders other than the Inbox with no problem, but the list of Inbox messages disappears when I go from a subfolder back to the Inbox. The disappearance of the message list in the Inbox also occurs during normal mail download, but the list reappears after the normal download is complete.

Unless you are posting from a different location, your "user agent" tells me that you are using 7.01. UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.0.2) Gecko/20021120 Netscape/7.01
So, the story may be more complicated.
Whichever one you have, I suggest that you change the setting for your account to leave on server, until you get the situation fixed.
Did you use 7.01 before 7.1? Did you uninstall 7.01, and created a new profile?

Yes, I am posting from my work computer (netscape 7.01). The problems are on my home computer (7.1, winXP Home). I will likely get DSL shortly which may fix some of the problems. But, with dialup, the get mail function hangs when the internet connection is dropped. It is still in hang mode when the connection is made again. Also, when getting mail, the inbox folder works fine until I switch to a subfolder. Then when I go back to the Inbox, the message list pane has disappeared until the mail download is completed. This is very annoying since I have to wait until the download is complete.

I had been using 4.7 and then installed 7.1 without removing 4.7. I did not have 6.x or 7.0x

I have the same problem with my inbox dissapearing on Netscape. I get lots of e-mails and cannot keep the on server. Does anyone know how to recover the lost inbox? I have lots of e-mails I would like back. Is this a bug in netscape? I am not on dialup but had a network card issue one day and the exact same thing happened to me as the description above. After I got my network working again I had all my other folders but not inbox.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Enis

P.S. I do have version 7.1 as well.

Since your OS are different look at this for the corect one on the hard drive. http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns7profloc.html
Whatever you do you should do it with Netscape closed. Deleting the Inbox.msf may fix the problem.
As a rule of thumb POP mail generate a pair of files on the hard drive, which is seen as a folder. All messages are in the Inbox file, and the headers are in the Inbox.msf file. You need a healthy header file to get your mail.
IMAP accounts do not have the Inbox file since the e-mails are stored at the server. However you can have a corrupted header file in IMAP accounts.

lost mail :(

Postby pilavdzic » Tue 14 Sep, 2004 3:39 pm

I have no file called inbox.msf anywhere on my hard drive, hidden or otherwise. I looked especially hard in the folders you pointed me to. Is this a common problem? Is there a known fix? If new mail was downloaded since then, does it mean all my old mail is lost for sure?

Thanks,
Enis
