I have run across a file format that I have not heard of. Could someone clarify what the abreviation stands for?

Short for Audio Video Interleave, the file format for Microsoft's Video for Windows standard. See under Video for Windows.
Its a very common file format used in Windows Media Player and compatible with several Microsoft products.
