NEWS - SUSE Linux 9.1 is on it's way . . .

Postby DJGM » Fri 19 Mar, 2004 5:37 am

Novell has announced that their recently acquired Linux division, SUSE Linux will soon be
releasing version 9.1 of the popular SUSE Linux distribution. The forthcoming release will
be the first commercial Linux distro to include the new Linux kernel version 2.6.x.

SUSE Linux 9.1 will also ship with the default desktop GUI's KDE 3.2.1 and GNOME 2.4.2.

It has also been announced by Novell, that the proprietary SUSE Linux installer program
known as YAST is to be made open source, and will no longer be proprietary software.

Mandrake Linux 10 has the 2.6 Kernel, it's already out. Very nice to see Novell's commitment to open-source too! :) (Even though Netware still beats Linux as a server OS :( )

My nickname comes from both Mandrakesoft's name and, to a leeser degree, the Mandrake plant.

After SuSE 9.0 came out, I attempted to install the Gnome interface afterwards. Logging in using Gnome, only worked when using root, not as a regular user.

This was when I had the hard drive partitoned with Windows 98SE on the other partition. Because of this, I have not attempted to reinstall Gnome on the hard drive (now partitioned with XP Home).

I have been giving serious thought to downloading Mandrake 10.0 Community and trying it out to see how it compares to SuSE.

Novell aims to make SUSE Linux 9.1 the first commercial Linux distribution with Kernel 2.6.x.
Mandrake Linux may have released a downloadable "community" edition of their latest distro,
but neither SUSE 9.1, nor Mandrake 10.0 have actually been commercially released yet . . .

Even though I'm running the Mandrake 10.0 Community Edition at the moment, I'm hoping
that Novell/SUSE manage to officially and commercially release their new Linux distro first.
