Mail Profile lost while upgrading from 1.4 - please help

Postby agordon » Mon 22 Mar, 2004 1:46 am

I was upgrading from Mozilla 1.4 to Mozilla 1.6 and Thunderbird. After installing 1.6, launched Mozilla but it wouldn't take the profile. This happened a few times, so I'd exit and restart, and it would give me the same thing. So then I gave up on Mozilla and went to work on thunderbird. I tried moving the profile over from mozilla mail to thunderbird, but the old profile was nowhere to be found. I looked around for files, went back to the mozilla folder, went other places... couldn't find it. Now it appears as tough I've lost hundreds of important emails. Does anybody know how to restore my old profile and regain my lost messages? Please help.

Since you move the profile, I suppose you know that for Windows 2000/Windows XP that the profiles and mail are in the following path:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\ApplicationData\Mozilla\Profiles \profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail
NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
To see hidden files:
1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
2. Click the View tab
3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

If you have a single profile, it may be trickier, but, since I have more than one, it is no problem, because I can select the desired one from the profile manager. Did you remove 1.4 before installing 1.6?
The biggest problem may be in your attempt to move. Never, ever move. (how did you move, by the way, and from where to where?) Always Copy and then Paste. By doing this you cover yourself from possible mistakes.
If you had not attempted to move, it would have been no problem, but if you did and don't know how you did it, the only possible work around, would be to create a profile for 1.6, and enter exactly the same name which you had before, and it should be in the correct folder.

My files are not hidden and I can see profiles, just the ones there are not my old profile, and none of them contain my emails. I did not remove mozilla 1.4 before installing 1.6. I mispoke when I said move. I meant copy and paste. The issue was not with the moving. Mozilla 1.6 did not recognize a profile, and wanted to give a default one. When I went to manually copy and past my old profile into the new one, the old file was not there.
