"There will be a new version of the Netscape browser coming early
summer". This from Anne Bentley, Vice President of Communications,
AmericaOnline.

I don't know any more than that, you're on your own to pursue this ..

This is NOT an April Fool joke !!

According to ChrisI's user agent string, looks as if it will be Netscape 8:

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7b+) Gecko/20040328 Netscape/8.0a (IBM)

I'd still like to know ChrisI meant by this . . .

ChrisI wrote:Folks, wait until April 2nd.

In just under 90mins it'll April 3rd, for me at least, so what gives . . . ?

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

Hi DJGM,

Me too! I've been keeping an eye on the Netscape ftp download page, even changed the link to reflect netscape8, but still nada???

Perhaps Chris was referring to the announcement that AOL would be releasing a "point" release based on the latest Mozilla code.

See this Newsgroup post: snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/c4h9gv$8r85@ripley.netscape.com

Hehe.
Some of you may remember Holger Metzger's April fools joke last year.
About a week or two ago, I suggested the notion of the Moz Champs, as a group, pulling an April fools joke. Holger suggested we
could fake a Netscape 8.0 based on Mozilla 1.7, available for download from a top-secret BETA location only and thus make Fernando Cassia a happy man.
The IBM bit was my suggestion.

Then BAM! About a week later, Holger sends this:
Ok, guys, either Fernando is way ahead of us in the April fool's department, or it's the real deal.
He then quoted an email message Fernando sent him of the announcement.

"Wait until April 2nd" was my way not ruling anything out, while keeping the joke alive, and encouraging the notion that there is more to it. The UA spoof was done by all Champs, with hopes that someone would notice and let their imagination run wild. (At this moment, I'd like to thank Antony for setting up the SillyDog Message Centre to display each poster's UA. )

Then Jay got confirmation from AOL.

Folks...The announcement is true.
It was just bad timing.

The Netscape version number is unknown. Right now it looks like it will be based on Mozilla 1.7, who's final release has been pushed back to mid-May.

There's nothing sweeter than when a joke gets turned around! That is truely amazing timing!

It is great to hear Netscape 7.x will be as up-to-date as possible in the Mozilla version it will use. It may have a very long shelf life if 7.1 is any indication.

In Important Rules and Policies thread,
I made it very clear, no April fool jokes in any technical support sections.

All messages got archived, when new users checking the old message, they may not noticed the date (April 1st).

Also, April fool's day is not in every country.

I wish I could share the same enthusiasm over this news as some of the rest of you. Personally, I'm not going to install something that's not going to be regularly updated and maintained; AOL's revenues are down significantly so surely it would stand to reason that the resources to apply an abundance of energy into Netscape would be minimal but surely AOL would seek to appease its Netscape audience if it would mean some sort of hint of bolstering revenue in lieu of The Petition.
Make no mistake, I'm a 'Netscapian' from the early days (first install 0.9) but that was back from the days when Netscape was a NETSCAPE endeavor - it's been an AOL product since 1998 and it shows. 'Netscape's' momentum came to an all-stop last summer and the gears were gearing down far before that.
Mozilla now is showing the old spirit and momentum Netscape once had. I for one have come to view Mozilla as the 'old' Netscape (I'm mean from the good old days) as Netscape reincarnated.
I would just hate to see everyone getting all up in the air excited over this news; I would liken a revving up of the old Netscape engine to something like a Beatles reunion, just ain't gonna happen folks. AOL's doling out a bone to us all and I actually somehow take it as an insult for them to play on everyone's sense of loyalty in hopes that somewhere in the mix it's going to generate some revenue somehow. (AOL's definitely been hanging out with Micro-marketing far too long)

As Anthony reminded us - this is a bit off topic but, as far as there being a Communicator 4.81? Take a look at latest news from Sun: http://apnews.myway.com//article/200404 ... RSG00.html

Not going to happen either ...

Comes a time to accept and archive things as history and move forward.

Just my 2c.
