Acrobat Reader and Netscape

Postby MichaelJRich » Thu 01 Apr, 2004 3:09 pm

Isn't there a way to tell Netscape to use Acrobat Reader to open a PDF file when I click it? I don't remember having to Right click and save the file before. OR, it could just be me....

Thanks
Michael

Do you see Adobe Acrobat listed in Netscape Help about:plugins?

For example, I show:
Adobe Acrobat
File name: nppdf32.dll
Adobe Acrobat Plug-In Version 5.00 for Netscape

MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled
application/pdf Acrobat pdf Yes

What version of Adobe Acrobat Reader do you have installed? In recent versions there is an option to view pdf files within the broswer, or not.
This is for Adobe Acrobat 6, from http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/312ee.htm
To show pdf files within a browser window:
1. Start Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
2. Choose Edit > Preferences.
3. Select Internet from the column on the left.
4. Select Display PDF in Browser in the Web Browser Options, and then click OK.

Also, if you already have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, PDF files are not opening within your browser window, but you would like them to do so, copy the file nppdf32.dll from your Acrobat Reader installation (On my computer, this is located in c:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 4.0\Reader\browser) to your Netscape \Plugins folder.

If you are , even vaguely, like me, look for any plugins folder which you may have. I have a number of them from uninstalled Netscape or Mozilla program, and see if the .dll is there.

Well, I've copied as much as I can for now. Still doesn't open a pdf file. I'll go through your suggestions in the morning.

I appreciate all your time on my behalf.

Alice,

I do see the plugin as being installed. I recently upgraded my Netscape to 7.1 and it was at that time the files stopped opening up.

What exactly happens when you click a link to a pdf file? Here is a link for you to try:
http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browser ... _Guide.pdf

If you save the link by right-clicking, and selecting "save link target as", then double-click the saved pdf file outside of Netscape, does the Adobe Acrobat program open? What is the version number of your Adobe Acrobat reader program? Does the version in the Adobe Acrobat program window match the plugin version you see in Netscape's about:plugins page?

You can also see what plugins are installed by going to http://wp.netscape.com/plugins/manager.html - Look under Your Installed Plug-ins to see if Adobe Acrobat is listed, then click the "show details" link under Adobe Acrobat to see the version number.

By the way, even if you don't have the nppdf32.dll Adobe Acrobat plugin installed, the Adobe Reader should still open as a helper application when uou click a link to a pdf file within Netscape.

I have 5.05 installed, and the file opens in Mozilla1.6. No reason why it should not work, unless Adobe Acrobat is not installed. We need to have the program installed in first place.

Also you should check:

<drive>:\program files\...........\defaults\pref\winpref.js

// Locate plugins by scanning the Adobe Acrobat installation directory with a minimum version
pref("plugin.scan.Acrobat", "5.0");

to ensure that is is looking for a version that you have installed.....
ie. if you have ver 4.0 and it is looking for minimum ver 5.0, it wont work.

but I could be wrong...

Well, back from the casino and checking your sugestions.

I have everything set up the way you folks are suggesting. When I click a pdf link, blank page shows up with nothing on it. I've checked the plugins folders and the winpref.js file and everything is hunky dory. Also have been to the about plugins within Netscape and it reads
Adobe Acrobat
File name: nppdf32.dll
Adobe Acrobat Plug-In Version 5.00 for Netscape

I can still right click to save to a file and view the pdf's that way.

I'm thinking it's still the new upgrade to 7.1. I didn't have this trouble with the 6.X version. But, I like what I see in 7.1 so I'll keep trying.

Appreciate very much your help.

Michael,
this may be unrelated, but did you create a new profile for 7.1?

If creating a new profile for Netscape 7.1 doesn't help then try this:

 Open Adobe Reader 5.0 from the Start Programs Adobe Acrobat menu.
 Click Edit | Preferences and select Options from the choices in the left panel.
 Look under "Web Browser Options". Place a checkmark next to "Display PDF in Browser".
(If it's already checkmarked, UNcheck it, click OK, then go back and REcheck it)
 Click OK then close Adobe Reader.

Then open Netscape and try clicking the .pdf file link inside Netscape 7.1 again.

If that doesn't help then close Netscape and search for the nppdf32.dll plugin. All copies should be the same version. RENAME the nppdf32.dll file inside your C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Plugins folder, if you see one there, to Xnppdf32.dll in case the problem is with that copy. Netscape should then use the copy of nppdf32.dll in the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Reader\Browser folder (assuming plugin scanning is enabled for version 5.0).

Reopen Netscape and try the .pdf link again.

If all else fails you can go back into the Adobe Reader 5.0 preferences, options, and UNcheck "Display PDF in Browser". What that will do is to make Netscape open PDF files using Adobe Reader as a "helper application". Next time you attempt to open a .PDF file, Netscape will ask you what to do with the application/pdf filetype. Tell Netscape to open with the default application.

I looked at all your suggestions, applied them all, then rapped Netscape on the top of it's head saying, "Hello McFly! Anybody home in there?" and everything works now! Don't know if it was your suggestions or my rapping, but the end result is I can now open PDF files like a flash!

THANK YOU for your patience, your advice, and your time. I have to soak my knuckles now....

"Hello McFly! Anybody home in there?"
I loved "Back to the Future" :)

Glad to hear it's working now
