Received MS Windows Security Update CD

Postby Lorraine » Tue 13 Apr, 2004 10:10 pm

Yesterday I received my Security update CD from MIcrosoft and it was delivered by Purolator.
Now I live in the 2nd largest city in Quebec, so I wonder why they sent it by Purolator. I have snail mail service to my door.
It has the Security CD and a Free Antivirus and Firewall Software Trial CD. Free for a year.
I didn't use the latter as I have Zone Alarm Pro 4 already installed. But I might try the AV, I wonder if it will work in Mozilla? Anyone know?

Just thought someone might be interest in what I receive in the mail. Of course I signed up for it a month or so ago.

Hi,
Good for you.
I am not ordering it because I do not believe in that stuff.
I hope you enjoy your new cd.

What is the point in getting this update?

The point of it is to get recent Microsoft Windows security updates, without
having to download them. I would guess that the number of updates on
the aforementioned CD would require a broadband internet connection
to be able to download them all in a decent amount of time.

Hi Lorraine and all:

I just received my CD, too, and I'd like to hear what you think about it after using it.

I have a hunch WHY they came out with it--relating to "the" security update of Feb. 2/04. MS has had lots of trouble getting anyone to download that particular patch. Cnet, CNN, and others called our attention to the downside of that particular update (MS04-004). I read it, then read the KB article on it (832894)--and finally called them on it. My main concern was that it disabled the Active X scripts and controls. I can't afford that because I use CD-Writer Plus and HP Simple Trax for backing up my programs. I haven't downloaded that update.

My question is whether you can pick and choose from the CD which updates you want to use(?) Someone else asked which antivirus was included: EZ Armor LE(?!?) Never heard of it...

I checked out the Microsoft Security Update CD. Here is a copy of the information I was given AFTER I clicked the "Install Updates" button:
==================copy/paste======================
Install Updates
We recommend that you install the software updates included below for Windows XP. These updates include reliability, performance, and critical security enhancements. We have also included the latest releases and security patches for Windows Media Player and DirectX for your convenience.

Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) is designed to ensure Windows XP platform compatibility with newly released software and hardware, and includes updates to resolve issues discovered by customers or by Microsoft's internal testing team. Windows XP SP1 includes Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1. Read More online.

Windows XP Service Pack 1 or higher has been detected on your machine, you do not need to take any action.

=================end c/p========================

I got my CD the same day I got my new computer which came preloaded with WinXP Pro sp1a, so my new PC was pretty up-to-date to start with. The CD only contained updates from October 2003 and earlier so it didn't offer me much. I saw that two update items were listed for my system:
-The WinXP Update Rollup
and
-The Windows Media Player 9 series which I didn't think I wanted or needed since Windows Media Player for WinXP seemed to work fine.

I was told that SP1 and DX9 were already found on my system so I was not given the choice to select those updates.

The "WinXP Update Rollup" includes a number of different updates according to the mskb article on using the CD:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=833242 How to obtain and use the Windows Security Update CD (February 2004)
many of which I didn't need, but it appeared that it was "all or none" so I ended up not using the CD and, instead got only the updates I needed, as well as the newer updates not offered on the CD, from Windows Update

This is copied from the "Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition" section ofthe above article:
To install the updates that are on the Windows Security Update CD, follow these steps.
(snip)
Step 2: Install updates
The following updates are installed by the Windows Security Update CD:

* Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
* DirectX 9.0b
* Windows Media Player 7.1 in Windows 98
* Windows Media Player 9 in Windows 98 Second Edition or in Windows Millennium Edition
* MDAC 2.8
* The security hotfixes that correspond to each operating system

Try running the CD and see what choices you are given in Win98. It might be that you have to install all or none of the hotfixes.

EZ Armor LE is a security suite made by Computer Associates and includes a firewall based on ZoneAlarm (which I've never used) and an antivirus program, which is the successor to InnoculateIT antivirus which I have used for years and still have installed on my Win95 machine.
Here is the website for EZ Armor: http://www.my-etrust.com/products/

Regarding Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-004
Issued: February 2, 2004
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (832894)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/securi ... 4-004.mspx

Do you have a link to one of the articles you saw that explains the problem with this security update and ActiveX scripts and controls?

I also wanted to point out again, that the Microsoft Security Updates CD you got only contains updates from October 2003 and EARLIER, so that particular update will not be included.

See http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp
Order the Windows Security Update CD
Updated Date: April 16, 2004

The Windows Security Update CD will be shipped to you free of charge. This CD includes Microsoft critical updates released through October 2003 and information to help you protect your PC...
