4.8 not working after removing IE

Postby Red97ZL600@netscape.net » Sun 20 Oct, 2002 1:12 am

I started to delete the latest version of IE (6). Because it is so embedded all over the place, I thought better not to try to remove... I am not a geek, but am somewhat knowlegable. Is this an impossible task? I could not locate the uninstall file....Also, I have been using Netscape 4.8 and cannot get to view certain sites because of the lack of high encryption. Can I get 4.8 with the higher (128)encryption??

Ron

P.S. And I didn't shout this time....LOL

There is no way uninstall IE. However there are two apps that can do it. One is Revenge of Mozilla and IEradicator. I have never used them.

Also, I have been using Netscape 4.8 and cannot get to view certain sites because of the lack of high encryption. Can I get 4.8 with the higher (128)encryption??

I believe that NS 4.5 and higher supports 128 bit encryption. That means its included in 4.8.

As other members of this message board will know, my recommendation
for removing ANY version of Internet Explorer from a Windows 9x based
system is with the IERadicator app. It clears out 99% of IE, while leaving
behind a couple of core components that Windows requires to be able to
continue to run efficiently. In fact, you should find that Windows 98 will
run considerably smoother and a bit faster after removing IE and it's
totally pointless/useless/worthless desktop web integration.

Good! I would have had a problem, because one font that I stumbled on, I think that it was Copperplate something or other, has letters which are only a smaller version of the capital letters.
As for encryption , as far as I know all NS from 4.75 on, have 128-bit encryption and are safe. There were potential problems with earlier versions. Click on Help/about Netscape to find about what you have. So, get 4.8!

Or you could update to a newer Gecko based browser, which also support 128bit Security.

IE and Netscape and AOL

Postby thomasjtracy » Mon 28 Oct, 2002 1:03 pm

I have a problem in that I have somehow corrupted my IExplorer 5.0 program....I was adding MS OFFice and had my McAfee virus running and deleted an old version of AOL and and and ....anywho I lost my ability to get to the net though I have learned in the last few days that email and the net are different. After spending about $100 on phone call techs, I got some AOL person who suggested installing netscape asd my browser. Another guy at CompUSA thought this might work alos. All I am trying o do at the moment is a quick fix and get me internet access again as easily as possible. I am using my neighbor's pc and signed on the netscape site and downloaded the quick and easy program. I went over and went to install it on my PC and I got the error message that the "setup has encountered a network problem and has paused the download. If you have just lost your network connection please click resume once your network has been reestablished". What does this mean. I tried to download the big file for netscape but I do not have a zip drive and am liminited to 1.44MB floppy disks. I do have a disk drive but I was told that I must first download to the hard drive and then burn to the CD. If anyone has knowledge I am all ears.

Sincerely Tom Tracy

Josh is correct. 4.8 should have high encryption, unless you are trying to use Netscape somewhere in the" triangle of evil". But, I cannot find any place where that is spelled out.

I believe that NS 4.5 and higher supports 128 bit encryption. That means its included in 4.8.

Please note that strong encryption (or any encryption) only available when connect to a secured site with secured port (secure connection) and valid certificates, in other words, normal browsing are not encrypted at all, no matter which browser you are using. Some webservers only support 56bit encryption, you can't get higher.
