(Note: I am not a particularly savvy user)
I use IE and MS Office. I download almost nothing, have NAV always up to date, never open attachments and very occassionally open a pdf. Why would I have a file called liprefs.js on my c: drive that was modified this past Feb 22nd? I did bring my computer in to tech support for a noise and speakers that weren't working so maybe they did something but I don't have the capacity to do anything other than use the software so I know it wasn't me. In googling I found you guys but I read that liprefs is for a mac. I have Win 98 and MS Office 2000 and NAV 2002. Why would I have a file related to a MAC and what would make it get modified? Just concerned about spyware, etc. (don't have adaware yet.)

Hi NAZA, and welcome to the Forum,

The liprefs.js file is a Netscape Communicator 4.7x file, and is used for roaming profiles.

Exactly my point. So if I never use Netscape navigator that I know of and having no idea what a roaming profile is, how did it get modified this past Feb?

Where were you lookijng for this file. And, what do you see to say that it was modified. lipref.js is presnt in my NS4.8, and I use WinXP and do not use roaming profile. I had always been in PCs. The file is there, in case you want to use it. You can see what is in it, by opening with Notepad or Wordpad.
In any event, it is not a Mozilla or Netscape7 file. So, relax.

liprefs.js

Postby NAZA » Tue 18 May, 2004 6:25 am

I mentioned Netscape cause the other person said it was a Netscape file so that's why I mentioned that I don't use it ever so I couldn't see how it was modified.
Also, that's why I mentioned that I don't have adaware yet so I don't know if it's spyware etc cause I don't have adaware.
When I open MSWord, and click on the file open icon I have it set to open at C:/
The folders are listed first and then individual docs, pdfs, etc. Anything I haven't tucked into a folder. And there it is. In the file list which I have set to View/Details so I see the modified date of my docs. I wanted to put some away that belonged in folders. If it had been last modified in 99 or 2000 like some of the others like the autoexec bat, (I already know what that is) etc I would have ignored it as something belonging on my computer during initial set up. But with a recent modification date and a name I don't recognize I decided to google it and found this list. so I joined and posed my question of what is it and how would it get recently modified.
So if anyone has any feedback that would or could address that question that would be great.

liprefs.js

Investigated a tad more. As I mentioned before, I had brought the computer into tech support for a noise but that was a Sat afternoon, have no idea which Sat.

This file was modified on a Sunday afternoon. They are open on Sunday so now I know it definitely was not them doing anything fancy. It had to be me and on a Sunday in the winter I definitely could and would have been visiting websites for some of the work I do or buying a ticket for a train or bus or something. Have no idea but really now into opening it when it's not necessary, not sure where it came from or what it's doing there, etc.

Did a search just now and it's there in 3 places.

C:\
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\myusername
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\User00

First one modified 2/22/04 at 2:07 pm
Second one modified 2/22/07 2:11 pm
Third one modified 11/6/01 10:46 pm

Got the computer in 1999. All installation files modified in 1999 and 2000.

I am beginning to think that just maybe, (only cause I do this at work) I used Netscape to see the modification date of an html page, something IE doesn't seem to do, to see how old the info at a page is.

Only if I were trying to work at home which is incredibly rare.
So if this file does have something to do with Netscape then that would be it. Only thing I could ever imagine using Netscape for.

I think I'll go bring up a web page and ck the modification date with Netscape and see if that file modification date changes.

I opened Netscape, got the dialog box for picking a roaming access personal profile, switched it to an old one. Switched it back.
I edited the personal profile in the dialog box, still no affect on the modification date of that file.

liprefs.js correction

Postby NAZA » Tue 18 May, 2004 7:08 am

Previous msg should have said that the tech support for my computer noise is NOT open on Sunday and that's why I know for sure it had nothing to do with them.

sorry 'bout that sentence that made no sense.

Sorry, but I have to say that I cannot make much sense of your request, aside the fact that it is not for either Netscape or Mozilla, which are handled at this newsgroup. You post should belong at the Communicator group.
But, I would prefer to put this one to sleep, because it is not connected with any particular problem.
But, you are concentrating on the the liprefs.js file, and no other file in that directory. You said that the computer place was closed, but was the computer in your hands by then. In other word, you dropped off on Saturday. Did you pick it up the same day?
My liprefs.js file has 55 entries, and was not touched since May11, which tells me nothing. Many, if not all of the lines are duplicates of the prefs.js file.
But, I got this from a page in a page which I got from a search. By the why one item mentions that liprefs.js file is for Macs, but none of the others do.

<BTW, if you're really paranoid about your privacy, there are a couple more things you may wish to do. If you don't want a history of websites you've visited to be saved onto your hard drive, you can also make the files: PREFS.JS, LIPREFS.JS, and NETSCAPE.HST read-only (also in your user's directory). This will completely prevent any future "history" to be written to disk. To clear out your existing "history", delete the NETSCAPE.HST file then open Netscape. Netscape will recreate a new (clean) one. You can also use any text editor to open the PREFS.JS and LIPREFS.JS and delete entries such as user_pref("browser.url_history.URL_1", "http://www.knowplace.org);. After you're done editing, make sure you remember to make those three files read-only.>

and, you can download Adaware from http://www.adaware.de
I found it to be good, but may be too much for any impressionable person. I went through a period like that, and I ended up deleting, instead of just quanrantining a file necessary to drive one of my programs.
