7.02 installation still shows as 7.1!

Postby Amrad » Sat 22 May, 2004 9:09 pm

I had installed Netscape 7.1 (base) but after reading the note for Windows 9x users to install 7.02 instead (which I assume also applies to ME), I uninstalled 7.1 and installed the 7.02 Streamline version.

However, in Help/About Netscape, it still shows as 7.1! Is this correct or has 7.02 not been installed properly and/or 7.1 not been uninstalled properly, for some reason?

Regards,

Dave.

I recently had this help me with an operating system problem in my useragent in another post. Go to your prefs.js file in your Netscape folder, right-click on it and select Edit. you should now be in a text-editing program like Notepad. Scroll down to a pref that says "user_pref(general.useragent.override)" and delete that particular line. Don't leave a gap in the file where that pref was. Now restart Netscape and type "about:" in the location box.

Hello dluchini30,

Thanks for your reply.

I looked in my prefs.js file (Windows/Application Data/Mozzilla/Profiles/Default/*.slt) but I don't have the entry "user_pref(general.useragent.override)", only "user_pref(general.useragent.contentlocale", "")." Removing that entry made no difference, I'm afraid! :(

I also looked in "Program Files/Netscape/Netscape/" but there are no "prefs.js" files there.

Any other suggestions?

Regards,

Dave.

Try this instead:

In the Address Bar in Netscape, type in About:Config. You should get a list of preferences. Scroll down to general.useragent.<many things can be here> and see if there is anything that makes reference to Netscape 7.1. If there is, just replace 7.1 with 7.02.

If you see 7.1 in Help?About Netscape, you have 7.1. And there is at least one way to tell without doing anything drastic. Go to Mail, and see if you can have a Junk folder in your mail account. The Junk folder was introduced with NS7.1. Of course, this would probably show if you are tring to use 7.1 profile with 7.02. I don't know what effect this would have in displaying the User Agent.
Can you tell us the name of the file which you used to install 7.02?.
Also, look in the Add/Remove, what is listed there? You can't fool that with the User Agent.

Hello dluchini30,

Thanks for your reply.

The only thing I found with about:config was "general.useragent.vendorSub, user set, string, 7.1" I changed the 7.1 to 7.02 and restarted Netscape. However, in Help/About I still get 7.1!

If I right click on Netscape.exe and select properties, it gives the version as 7.1.0.0, which suggests that I have version 7.1 installed!

Perhaps I should try uninstalling Netscape V 7.1? again and reinstalling Netscape Streamline 7.02 (netscape702_sd701.exe) and see what happens, unless you have a better sugestion! :)

Regards,

Dave.

Hello Fulvio,

Thanks for your reply to my post.

Yes, I do have the "Junk" folder in mail and the file with which I tried installing 7.02 is "netscape702_sd701.exe" which I downloaded from the Silly Dog site.

Add/Remove shows "Netscape (7.1)"! It is certainly beginning to look as though I have 7.1 and not 7.02 installed, which is the conclusion to which I was coming anyway!

Perhaps I should try again to uninstall Netscape V 7.1(?) and reinstalling V 7.02. However, if I do that, will I lose the junk mail feature, which I find very useful?

In this case you can probably leave 7.1 on your ME machine. I have an ME machine with Netscape 7.1 and have not had any problems with it. It was only on my 98SE machines that I started noticing the resource leak. In reponse to your question, yes you will lose the Junk Mail features of Netscape 7.1. If you still want to get Netscape 7.02 back, uninstall Netscape 7.1 and download Netscape 7.02 again.

Hello dluchini30,

Thanks for your reply.

I have had problems with Netscape with symptoms that seem to be those associated wth the resource leak. The GUI starts to "disintegrate" (for want of a better description!) so I know that when that happens, I will have to close Netscape pretty soon or it <will> eventually crash! I have 512MB of memory so that's not the problem!

If going to 7.02 means that I will lose the junk mail feature, I might have to put up with the problems, as I don't particularly want to lose that facility!

Regards,

Dave.

The only time that I've had my ME machine crash is when I leave it on for about a week at a time while running Netscape 7.1... If it happens more frequently than that (say once every few hours) then I would say upgrade to a Mozilla build, which (unless you install version 1.4 and not 1.4.x) wlll not have this problem. This issue should be resolved if and when Netscape 7.2 is released.

IMHO, you should probably upgrade to Windows XP. It is more stable than Windows ME and is compatible with more programs. If you don't meet the system requirements (although Microsoft says at least a 233MHz processor and 64MB of RAM, I would reccomend about a 500MHz mahine and 256MB of RAM) you can always do a clean install of Windows 2000, which was still considerably more stable than 98/ME.

Hello dluchini30,

Thanks for your reply,

I may give Mozilla 1.4x a try, though when I tried it before (I'm not sure what version, though), on a different PC with a different OS, I seem to recall having problems so I went back to Netscape!

I was planning on trying Windows 2000 but I was made redundant so I am currently unemployed and my finances are <very> limited, so I can't afford to upgrade the OS at present! :(

My PCs's spec should be more than adequate for XP should I chose to go down that route! I have a Gigabyte GA-8IHXP with Intel 850E Chipset Motherboard, a Pentium 4 Titan 2.4GHz Processor with a 533MHz FSB, 512MB of Rambus memory, an Asus V8420 Deluxe Series GeForce4 Ti4200 Graphics card with 128MB DDR RAM and a Terratec DMX 6fire 24/96 Soundcard.

Thanks for your assistance.

Regards,

Dave.

If you do try ou Mozilla 1.4x, make sure to download 1.4.1 or higher. Since Netscape 7.1 was based on Mozlla 1.4 (not 1.4.1 or 1.4.2, which both corrected this issue), do NOT download 1.4 and use 1.4.2 or 1.4.1 instead.

Hello dluchini30,

Thanks for the warning, though I had understood that I should avoid Mozilla 1.4 and use a later version!

OK then. Be sure to uninstall Netscape 7.1 first, and delete your profile directory in your c:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla folder as Mozilla and Netscape share the same profile directory, and Netscape profiles are not completely compatible with Mozilla.
