The Mozilla Foundation has made the second beta release of Mozilla Firefox 1.5 available. Mozilla Firefox 1.5 Beta 2 is expected to be the last beta release, followed by at least one release candidate, and a final Mozilla Firefox 1.5 release in November.

Here's what's new in Firefox 1.5 Beta 2:

Beta 1 users that want to help test software update, should wait for the automatic update to be triggered sometime in the next few days. The incremental update from Beta 1 to Beta 2 is 700K bytes.

The "incremental" update feature was activated in the nightly builds on Sept 1, as mentioned here:

Try as I might, it refuses to run . . .



That message always comes up, even though there's no other instances of Firefox running.
So, like it suggests, I reboot the computer. Which makes not a single shred of difference!

What gives?

I believe that's the message you now get in Firefox 1.5 beta if a firefox process is still running OR if a parent.lock file exists in the profile folder. Try the following, from the suggestions to unlock your profile at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_in_use

The application may have shut down abnormally, leaving the lock in place. To fix this, delete the file named "parent.lock" (Windows), "lock" (Linux), or ".parentlock" (Mac OS X) in your profile folder. In OS X you need to use a free utility like Onyx or Maintain to turn on visibility for invisible files to show ".parentlock". This file contains no information, and deleting it will unlock the profile.

I decided to give the beta a try. So far, it's subjectively a bit faster
then 1.07, although identical on actual speed tests. I installed to a
new folder, so am able to go back & forth between the beta & 1.07.

The only problem I've run into so far is an issue with not rendering an
oddly sized font tag <+1.5> that every other browser I've ever used has
rendered fine. Most of my themes & extensions are disabled, but it is a beta...

I wish there was an option to view & select specific privacy (form) data
to delete rather then all or nothing.

Very stable so far. It also seems to load a bit faster on Win 98.

Autoupdate function in F1.5beta1 did not perform an update, despite the "alert me" function enabled. I installed it over Beta 1 without any problems.
A few extensions, which I have installed were all updated - working:
- PDF Download
- Compact menu
- Reporter

I am using SaFire 0.35 Theme at the moment without any problems. At the moment Beta 2 is working fine & a bit faster than previous version.

Beta channel
* Firefox 1.5b2 was not offered by the beta channel at the same time as the initial announcements, only the usual installers were available from the FTP & web servers. The update is now available.
* Automatic checking for updates was broken in 1.5b1, use Help -> Check for updates to check manually (Bug 309784).

This has nothing to do with Firefox, but it is close. I got the Thunderbird nightly of 10-20, yesterday, and, today the auto-update worked. The User Agent says that it is 1.5.
