Mozilla 1.7 and tabs

Postby James » Tue 29 Jun, 2004 10:50 am

In FF 0.9 you can install a tab button for your main tool bar which allow you to start a new tab and thus keeps that tab bar out until you require it. Does Mozilla have such an option for a tab button? I know it says in preferences that you can turn off tabs when only one page is visible, but short of having some key board shortcut, how do you start tabbed browsing without the convenience of that tab button?

I'm also disappointed in the manner in which searching is treated differently. I like the extra Search address (next to the URL address box) that allows for a drop down Search Engine choice AND opens your search in tabs rather than windows. Is there a way to do this in Mozilla? I know we have only to type in the word/phrase being searched (in the main URL address bar) but it opens in a new window and I'd rather it did so in a tab.

As for your tab issue, I have seen no way of adding a tab button to the toolbar. There might be a such option in Prefbar at http://prefbar.mozdev.org (I'm not exactly sure if there is), but that almost defeats the purpose of window size, which I'm guessing is your focus here. You can always collapse the bar in Preferences -> Tabbed Browsing and use Control-T to bring up a new tab.

As for your Search issue, you can always tell Mozilla to open all windows as tabs in Preferences -> Tabbed Browsing.

James,

If you disable the "Hide the Tab Bar...." in Preferences, there will be one Tab open, which will allow you to open new tabs with the small icon on the far left (Open a new tab).

You can also open a new tab with a middle click of the mouse. It works great on my Logitech Optical Mouse.

Another option is to add this script in about:config:
browser.throbber.url","http://www.google.com (or the search engine of your choice)
Then you can click on the Mozilla throbber in the upper right corner and it will open your Search Engine.

If you don't know how, just let me know.

Although the "Search" tab doesn't have a dropdown menu in 1.7, it will open in the existing tab.

James,
the answer is to just a bit adventurous, and look at your Preferences.
You may not like the default values, but they can be easily changed.
I have five tabs in my 1.7, and I am working my way up to the ten I have in Moz1.6, which has become redundant.

Thanks, but I'm still confused. When I go to Preferences and Hide the Tab Bar when only one tab is open, there is no little button to the left to open a new tab. If that were the case, it would be great. Is my version somehow corrupted? All I see is the collapse personal bar button and collapse main tool bar button. As for the mouse, my center button is a scroll wheel and it won't open a new tab... just allows me to scroll quickly up and down.

I guess the Ctl "t" is the answer? I knew there must be a keyboard short cut but I was hoping for a button. I'm not big on key board short cuts since I like to work primarily with my mouse. No extensions will help out, right? :(

In the case of mouse buttons, you could always do one of two things:

1) Try to install the Firefox button into App-suite and see what happens. Before you do that, make a backup of your Profile, as things like this have wreaked havoc on my installation.

2) Check out the Extension Room at http://extensionroom.mozdev.org and see if there is something under Tabs and Windows that could help you out here.

Thanks. I'm going to forego the Firefox mouse download (just too chicken to mess around) BUT I will definitely go and have a look at the extensions. As you can see from my user string, I'm back to FF. I've just grown so used to FF/TB that it's very hard to let go of some of its benefits. I really love its search window... the fact that I can do searches in tabs and the beauty of having a tab button on my main tool bar.
