K-Meleon: Prospective New Version

Postby Alterian » Thu 26 Aug, 2004 11:37 pm

Hi all,
I'm posting this message as a request for anyone who is interested in helping out with beta testing etc., of a potential new version of K-Meleon which will be based upon the v1.7.2 of Mozilla GRE, and will also hopefully round up current bugs and add in user requested new features.

Unfortunately due to the sometimes fickle nature of K-Meleon's development, and the transitory ways of it's users, at the moment we could really use some people to help out in any way possible. The main way to "let us know" if you would like to be a beta tester, or similarly just help out with ideas and suggestions, is to join up with the dev's mailing list:
http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/kmeleon-dev

You can simply post a message stating your interest there, or alternatively join us in the regular K-Meleon forums as well:
http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/forum/

K-Meleon really does fill a niche for those users who enjoy using a light and fast browser with the benefits of the Mozilla GRE thrown in. I hope that some new and maybe some old faces will join in and help us. :)

What's the difference between K-Meleon and Firefox?

Well, for starters
 K-Meleon is available only for Windows.
 K-Meleon uses OS native elements and controls for the user interface, as opposed to XUL.
 K-Meleon offers performance superior to Mozilla Firefox on slower computers.
 K-Meleon is developed independently of Mozilla or Mozilla Firefox.

A Celeron 600mhz is not 'fast', lol.

I liked K-Meleon, but It never had the 'auto complete' feature, so I never ended up using it as my main browser.

How independent?

So it's not like Camino, but for Windows?

I should have clarified that unlike Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Camino, or Thunderbird, K-Meleon's development is not being overseen by the Mozilla Foundation. K-Meleon does use the same Gecko rendering code as these Mozilla-branded products, though.

Hmm, a group being ignored by the mainstream. Similar to us?

I know... what I ment was that it is much faster than a 400 and lower mhz computer. And it still runs smoothly today, other than crashing when using Windows Explorer
