ridiculous Posting Guideline in Moz Champions page

Postby Antony » Sat 03 Jul, 2004 10:08 am

What happened?
I made a huge mistake by following those Posting Guidelines in the MozillaChampions pages.

The guide line, (screenshot at the time of posting)

And the response I received...

Please, if you will, top post in this newsgroup. That is, write your reply then quote previous, such as I have done, Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

I followed what Mozilla Champions listed in their Mozilla Champions page, then I got told off by one of the Mozilla Champions.

That's really ridiculous.

Who should I blame now?

edit, reword subject title - 3.7.2004

edit again, subject changed from "I got told off because Moz Champions Guideline" - 24.7.2004

Hi, Antony.
IMO, it is because of a tradition of Mac users group which is independent from "Windoze" users group.
IIRC, top posting is Mac users group's tradition from the beginning of the Netscape's secure newsgroup for Mac users, in spite of the bottom posting is a favorite of the Windows' Netscape Champions.

A username "Moz Champion" reminds me Dan Gall, who is one of the best (former) Netscape Champions I encountered, and a mac user by nature.
He can bottom post when he posts outside Mac users group, so I believe he never minds when you bottom post (without apparent notification).

Antony,
I found the thread, and you will see that someone else came to your rescue. I, also, added a question, while bottom posting, asking if it was top or bottom. I have, pretty much given up on those newsgroups, but what you are saying shows that someone else does not know which else is up.
Also, does this belong here?

Hi,
That is unacceptable.
It is not right at all.
It makes no sense.
If I were you I would stop using those newsgroups.
B.T.W. Why would you post there when you have this Message Centre?
I also see you at Mozillazine forums.

Wellander,
it is very interesting to look at other newsgroup. I try to help, if I have an answer. But, I have been turned off by the newsgroups, not because of problems which I had, because the attitute of some of the users stinks.
At a certain point, there is no point continuing because it only feeds someone's ego.
And, all you have to look at the interminable threads. The incorrect posting is rare, but see how many people delete the part of the message which they don't like, also against guidelines.

If you have comments, complaints, etc. about the guidelines, please post them in the Mozilla Champions newsgroup. More info can be found at http://www.mozdev.org/mailing-lists.html.

I have suggested an addendum to the appropriate section of the guidelines in the Champs private group, with a link to this discussion.

While I agree that there should be an addendum to the guidelines (ala news.mozilla.org posting conventions), I do not agree that you were "told off". You were informed politely with a "please" and a "thank you."

And to Joji;
"Moz Champion" is Dan Gall. :)

Thanks Joji,
I have a feeling of that.

Joji wrote:IIRC, top posting is Mac users group's tradition from the beginning of the Netscape's secure newsgroup for Mac users, in spite of the bottom posting is a favorite of the Windows' Netscape Champions.
The point is...
1. The posting guideline said "bottom post".
2. I followed the posting guideline
3. The result, I shouldn't have followed the posting guideline.

This just reminds me of the [sdt=5451]Mozilla.org's documentation is not accurate[/sdt] issue.
A recap of [sdt=5451]Mozilla.org's documentation is not accurate[/sdt] issue:
* the documentation of What's New in Mozilla 1.7 RC1 said: "A new set of icons for files that are associated with Mozilla."
* It was clearly not true. The fact: there were no new sets of icons in Mac platform.
* I then received a huge resistance to mention that.

So, seems to me, the very similar attitude - What is available in or apply to Windows platform simply means the default or standard?

Wellander,

I also see you at Mozillazine forums.

Thanks Wellander,
Of course it is not acceptable, otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it.
I post in those newsgroups to check if I can post there, (also to verify if I was banned.)

As for MozillaZine Forums, I am free to post there, just like I don't (and I can't) limit any SillyDog701 members not to post somewhere else.

Chris,
I have nothing to do with addendum to the Posting Guidelines.
You missed the main point, I followed Posting Guidelines, but ended up I shouldn't have followed it.

So I was "told off" politely?

Seems like I have a nice place to tell the world how ridiculous it was, rather than posting in somewhere can't even allow to get in.

When I first mentioned the newsgroup, I also said "More info can be found at http://www.mozdev.org/mailing-lists.html."
To quote that page;
"Note: In an effort to deal with spam, authentication is required to access the newsgroups. The global username and password to log in to any of the newsgroups is -- mozdev/maduser."

Antony wrote:Seems like I have a nice place to tell the world how ridiculous it was, rather than posting in somewhere can't even allow to get in.
You can do both. Each of the two actions serve a different purpose. Unless you're saying you had no interest in getting it fixed.

FWIW, Jay added the addendum yesterday.

SillyDog701 is a lot easier to access.

ChrisI wrote:FWIW, Jay added the addendum yesterday.

hmm, seems like SillyDog701 Message Centre is a good place to get some documentation changed. ([sdt=5451]example[/sdt])

BTW, any words from person who represent Mozilla Champions to those who suffered? To those who followed the Guideline previously stated?

Laziness?! That's your reason?

Both were on account of me passing it on. Please do not depend on me for that. There are venues set up for reporting bugs. Please use them.

I wouldn't know.
