Ad-aware

Postby cmed25 » Sat 31 Jul, 2004 3:33 pm

I have netscape for browser, OS is Me and have a free virus program and also have Spybot installed. Do I need to download and install Ad-aware? It seems I'm getting so many things installed there will be no room for the fun things. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

It depends on the disk space. None of these programs take so much space, but it is mostly up to you. The scanning with Adaware is different that Spybot. Spybot will look at some specific file, matching them against a list. Adaware goes more deeply, but necessarily more usefully. In the past year, I have reported only cookies, which I don't want to ban. Of course, if I would use IE more, I would get more action.
It is important not to have all program at the startup. I do that with the AntiVirus software, but don't with ads stuff. Some people allow everything at the startup, and come quickly to a grinding halt.

I'm guessing you're looking for a cheap way of completely securing everything. You might want to try ZoneAlarm Security Suite, which for $60 gives you what I may call a "paranoid suite" of utilities that give you just about everything you need. You can take a look at that here.
To highlight its biggest features:
Antivirus
Firewall
Ad-blocking/mobile code control/cache cleaner

I can't say I've used the antivirus part, but I've heard it to be quite good.

Interestingly, since we started using Firefox, Adaware hasn't found squat. It' frequently updated.

Spybot finds less too.

Gee, what a coincidence :)

Take a look at the ZA forums first. ZA 5 has been problematic. Especially in concert with Norton software; though certainly not limited to that.

After using different 'suite' type programs over the years...I tend to gravitate to individual programs and have been happier as a result. Somehow part of the 'suite' always seems lacking.

I use ZA Free 4.5 and it's done it's job without getting in the way.

The only problem with using an older version of a firewall is like a non-updated anti-virus program. Hackers can find ways to shut off firewalls, which is why it's a good idea to keep an updated firewall even if it suffers from code bloat and is problematic.

Ad-aware and Spybot are both excellent programs (even better since they are free) and take relatively little in system resources. I have them both and do a scan once a week or so just to be sure. However, one of them will probably do the job. Ad-aware seems to have updates more frequently than does Spybot.

There is no problem using the free ZA, of which I have the latest 5.1.
Of course, if you use ZA Pro, with its antivirus, you would have problems even if not enabled, if Norton is your AV program. Very few AV program will even tolerate the presence of a partially uninstalled competitor. That's why I buy only the free versions. They are not as paranoid, and they still work.
In any event Norton programs are notorious for their inability to get along with other programs. I had, once, a minor problem with ZA 4.5. So, given the wrong circumstances anything may work against you.

Thanks for all the interest in my question about Ad-aware. Lots of good information offered. I can make a good decision now.
