Ad-block?

Postby James » Sun 08 Aug, 2004 9:07 am

I'm hesitant to download and install this extension to firefox 0.9.3 since I can't determine whether it has been updated for the latest version. Does anyone know this?

Exactly how does it work? I found the explanation a bit hazy. Thanks.

I assume you mean the Adblock project. It worked fine for me in App-suite 1.7b when I used it, but I haven't tested it on Firefox at all.
It is mentioned there that Adblock is tested only under Mozilla 1.3.1, and since then Mozilla has had many API updates. Although Firefox shares the same core, it might put certain objects in incorrect places, etc...
AFAIK, the only thing that would happen if you install it and it doesn't work, would be that you would get a block of text that says "Unloaded" in the status bar, similar to what happens if you try to install Adblock to NS6.1 or 6.2. Back up your profile, try installing it, and see what happens.

You might also check the Adblock project's forum, they seem to have an article on compatibility with Firefox 0.9.3.

James,
the explanation is pretty straightforward, but I don't know if I would want to get involved with Ad-block.
Popups and popunders are already taken care, internally. The most annoying are the animated ads, but they can be stopped, for the session, by clicking on Kill Flash of the Prefbar.
But, as it is with any extention, you should be able to disable it, if it does not do much for you.
The same as with the Popup blocker, Ad-block may affect your browsing.
One example was "doubleclick", which is everywhere. For a period of time I could not enter some legitimate sites, which were "served" by doubleclick.
At stake are an ad-free sites. Since I never look at the ads, it does not matter. And, DonL., do you regain any desktop space? I doubt it.

James,

In Mozilla and Firefox, [tt]Preferences[/tt] | [tt]Privacy & Security[/tt] | [tt]Images[/tt], then click [tt]Manage Image Permission[/tt]

You can simply block images from certain websites.

OR, just context click on the image (ads), and select to Block images from that website.

Together with pop-up blocker, they work very well for me, but only for images. (I don't block any images, just pop-up blockers)

As for the annoying Flash blocking, I have no idea.

SillyDog701 is proud not to have any advertisements (at this moment), but the situation might be changed in the future. You can support SillyDog701.
