OS X 10.3.5 is now available in Software Update


The 10.3.5 Update delivers enhanced functionality and improved reliability for Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther" and is recommended for all users.

Key enhancements include:

• improved support for NTFS formatted volumes
• improves reliability for user logins and mounting of home directories in a networked environment
• updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers
• improved Bluetooth compatibility for Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse and Bluetooth phones
• additional FireWire and USB device compatibility
• improved font management
• updated Mail and Image Capture applications
• improved compatibility for third party applications
• previous standalone security updates

Looks like Apple's doing good with update size, SP2 is a whopping 260MB!

There is one thing that irks me about what Apple says about certain updates these days . . .

Security Update 2004-08-09 delivers a number of security
enhancements and is recommended for all Macintosh users.

That is a somewhat misleading recommendation, since not "all Macintosh users" have
gotten around to upgrading their computers to Mac OS X yet. The security problem
that update sorts out, doesn't affect users of Mac OS 9 or earlier, so therefore,
it'd be more accurate to rephrase that recommendation as follows . . .

Apple could with bearing this in mind when issuing future Mac OS X updates . . .

Apple is sure smart on updates and on dial up users.

Why? There are other updates you need to get if you have just done a clean install on a Macintosh. iTunes, iMove, iDVD etc. Add all those up, and you have a lot more than the 80MB to download XP SP2 through automatic update or WindowsUpdate, which brings a system totally up to date (Direct X 9.0C, WMP 9 etc).

Most people have a non clean install and you can install those one by one, not all of them at once. There's something about Auto Update that I just don't like.

That message is copied from the Software Update window, it was seen under Panther.
However, there's a version of this update for Jaguar 10.2.8 as well.

But yes, they should address the words better.

It is interesting to note that once a new update is available, the file size of the original released update ( Mac OS X 10.3.5 ) has reduced.

A good method to reduce the downloading time.
