Hmm. Windows Live Mail is telling me to upgrade my browser, yet I'm using Firefox 3. I guess it doesn't recognize FF 3 quite yet...

Apparently, Microsoft's developers tested their 64-bit compiler so little, that they didn't even notice they left a "Beta2" label in the final build!

(And yes, it really is VS2008 final, it isn't beta 2)

This image is my monitor while I am playing music in my Zune library.

I hope it works.

That is awesome! How did you get this to work? Is it stable? I tried the very same thing about 4 - 5 years ago by swapping out explorer.exe, shell32.dll, and some other dlls, but I'd always get errors like the following:

What is the trick to making it work?

In the meantime, I'll dig up some weird PS/2 screen shots.

Fastest 486 on the planet!

Postby David Wonn » Wed 25 Feb, 2009 10:57 am

According to AIDA16, I must have the fastest 486 in the world!

Image

Normally the handy DOS utility refuses to run interactively under Windows, but I guess the designers neglected to check for the presence of Windows 3.0 in the background. For some reason, real mode Windows gets it right, but 386 Enhanced mode Windows interferes with AIDA's ability to get the correct processor speed. Sometimes it is close; other times it is way off, as seen above. It even thought this PS/2 was running an AMD processor!

P.S. Take a lucky guess what happens if you run this inside Windows 3.0 on a Pentium. :-)

Have fun. And while it's far from being "100% stable", it isn't exactly crashing every 5 seconds either; it's "usable". However, you'll end up with things like double-clicking opening the "Find" dialog, and other odd glitches. These can be fixed by changing some settings in the registry, but it takes some work.

Thanks for the link. It definitely has its share of glitches, like displaying a dozen instances of Task Manager in the systray, among other things. I especially like how it instantly brings up explorer windows, which is something XP never did get right. I'll have to play with this setup more to see if I can tweak it further.

Back to the topic of this thread, I'll post another PS/2 oddity shortly.

832x620 resolution with grayscaled icons

Postby David Wonn » Wed 04 Mar, 2009 10:58 am

Here are two more oddities for the price of one on the same PS/2:

Behold! Windows 95 is running in an obscure 832x620 resolution with grayscaled icons.

How is this done? Normally IBM's drivers for the original 512k XGA adapter only allow 640x480 with 256 colors and 1024x768 with 16 colors, both at low refresh rates. Even 800x600 was not possible previously. Fortunately a 3rd party enthusiast made it possible to breathe new life into this ancient adapter, as recently as last year, by adding more resolutions with better refresh rates as well.

As for the gray icons, I made this possible by installing a 16 grays driver from Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions onto Windows 95. I then changed it back to XGA, and to my surprise, the icons remained grayscaled. It's easily fixable by changing icon sizes in Display Properties. Some icons actually look decent this way, like the ones in the root of the start menu. Other icons don't, like the one for the DexDrive. I can easily fix that one icon back to color so that it stands out, since that's the main role of this 486: serving memory card saves from my N64.

Help window in front of shutdown dialog

Postby David Wonn » Mon 09 Mar, 2009 11:25 am

This one is actually pretty easy to pull off in Windows 95 and NT 4.0. Normally you cannot have another window in front of the shutdown dialog box, but I can:

Image

Click Shut Down from the Start Menu and then double-click the Help button, but hold the button on the second click until the help window comes up. Then move the mouse away from the Help button and release. The slower your processor, the easier it is to time it right. You can tab over to any of the buttons or click any of the radio buttons in the shutdown dialog without impacting this little glitch. However, if you click anywhere in the raised help window, the shutdown dialog will magically disappear as if you had clicked No, and then return to your normal desktop.

If you execute this trick on a higher resolution, you'll see the help window quickly resize itself and leave an artifact of its former size on the screen.

AIM 1.0 for Windows 3.11... on Windows XP! Surprisingly, this version still connects to AIM's servers (although the buddy list has to be inserted/imported manually; it does not download it).

In case anyone wants to play with this version of AIM, it can be found at OldVersion.com.
