To change the searchengine in the NetscapeToolbar in NS 7.2

Thanks to Chris Ilias at

Sure, it works.
- Close Netscape.
- In your profile folder, open netscapetoolbar.rdf in a Wordpad.
- Search the file for the text:
searchQueryURL
- Change the URL to:
http://www.google.com/search?q=

- Save and close.

This seems to work on win98Se.

Just wanted to add that it works in WinXP Pro also.

Of course, back up netscapetoolbar.rdf before making the edit, "just in case".

Unable to find noted file

Postby Arialies » Thu 30 Dec, 2004 12:56 pm

Greetings,

I was able to handle the "side bar search" thanks to other posts. Hopefully I will be as lucky here. I attempted to follow the steps to alter the search engine within netscape toolbar, but was unable to do it. I found a search.rdf file but in that did not see the "..searchurl" line which I'm supposed to search and alter. I'm running windows xp ...am I still able to alter the toolbar or do I just "pretend it isn't there" anymore. Thanks much.

The link to Chris' post leads me to a neat blank page. Anyhow, I think that the two earlier posts are dealing with entirely different situation than Arialies'.
I think that Arialies wants to change the search engine in the Netscape toolbar. Why not using the Google bar? My Netscape toolbar was disabled within minutes.

I guess the link died.

Close all instances of NS - including quickLaunch

backup netscapetoolbar.rdf before you edit

1.Open netscapetoolbar.rdf in a text editor.

2. search for

ns:searchQueryURL="http://search.netscape.com/ns/search?fromPage=NSCPToolbarNS&query="

3. edit to read

ns:searchQueryURL="http://www.google.com/search?q="

or url of your choice.

open NS and it should work.
