7.1 Mail Attachment Helper Application Problem!!!

Postby phallus007 » Mon 30 Aug, 2004 10:28 am

Okay, so I am having various clients come to me with the same problems....they are not able to open attachments using their IMAPI netscape 7.1 mail setup. These users are forced to save to their desktop, then open up the files (like word docs, pdf, etc). They have been used to just being able to double click on the the file in the attachment box, and have netscape automatically open the helper application associated with the file. I have tried everything I know from reading the help files, but netscape will not open the attachment at all. I have tried putting new MIME types in the helper application preferences, I have removed, then replaced them, I have made sure that they had the right settings for everything (not viewing attachments inline), but still nothing....whenever the user clicks on the attachment, nothing at all happens....even when right clicking, and selecting open, netscape does not find the application to open any documents at all...it's like it doesn't even try to find the application...

Is there any way to fix this? I have upgraded machines from 7.01 to 7.1, and it still didn't fix the problem. Is there anything like a master reset to get all the default preferences back, and start from scratch? Has anyone had the same problem? It's happened on multiple machines here at work, even with updated office xp, winxp, sp2. Would upgrading to 7.2 solve this problem?

Please help...it would be greatly appreciated...thanks...

Look through this earlier SillyDog thread and see if any of the suggestions are helpful:

Netscape 7.1 email attachments stopped opening

I would start with deleting the compreg.dat file, located in the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\components folder, especially if you are unable to access the Download Manager from the Tools menu. Make sure you exit Netscape completely, including QuickLaunch, before deleting.

See http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=180672 for more about the compreg.dat bug. Removing Netscape 7.1 and installing Netscape 7.2 is definitley the way to go.

Glad to hear the fix worked, but....I would still uninstall Netscape 7.1 and upgrade to Netscape 7.2.... deleting the compreg.dat file is only a temporary fix and the problem tends to return.

Best wishes,
Alice

Could you explain what you mean by " IMAPI netscape 7.1 mail setup"?
What type of ISP, I mean.
I am not going to tell you to have your clients be as paranoid as I am. I want to scan for viruses any attachment which I download. However, if "View Attachments Inline" is checked the attachment should be seen inline. There will also be an attachment to download and store.
It is probably different with .pdf or .doc files. It is no problem with .pdf files because there should be a plugin in the plugins folder, of the type nppdf32.dll placed there when Acrobat Reader is installed.
As Word docum ents my app.helper is of type: application/msword
MIME type:application/mswoword
description: application
Extention: doc and open it with the default application, which is Open Office.
I have heard of people having had problems with applications, sent or received from 7.1. somehow, I never had the problem. May be NS7.2 may be more understanding, because I never entered any app helper. The program seems to finds them, and enter them.
