12 Sep, 2004 12:06 pm Mozilla Firefox 1.0 PR release candidate released [sdp=44341]

I was browsing Mozilla's FTP server a few minutes ago, and noticed a new folder set up in the Firefox Releases section. It appears that a release candidate of Mozilla 1.0 Preview Release is now available. The files have been uploaded to Mozilla's FTP server, although there is no reference on the front page of Mozilla.org as of yet.

Mac OS X disk image
Windows ZIP file
Windows installer
Linux GTK2 + XFT installer
Linux GTK2 + XFT (no installer)

Comments:
The changes from Mozilla Firefox 0.9.3 appear to be subtle. Some toolbar buttons (and the Close Tab button) have been refined in appearance. Also, there is an item under the Help menu called Promote Firefox that appears to direct to this URL.

UPDATE:

The "0.10rc" folder on Mozilla's FTP server has now been removed, and this software release appears to have been withdrawn, at least for the time being.

Could the Mozilla Firefox 1.0 PR RC have inadvertantly leaked onto the server in error? I look forward to a formal announcement concerning this release.

EDIT:
Immediately after I posted this message I checked Mozilla's FTP server again and found that the "0.10rc" folder and its contents had been restored. Very odd...

EDIT AGAIN:
20 minutes later I checked another time and found that "0.10rc" had disappeared again! What is going on...is Firefox 1.0 PR RC playing "hide-and-seek?"

im fully return to Netscape 7..2, for now, i wont try any FX build untill its final, they just keep delaying the release plan, i m almost fed up with that, the worst thing is that I have to update all the extensions and themes everytime new version came out, thats annoying

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.2) Gecko/20040804 Netscape/7.2 (ax)

Whatever,whatever,have a nice day.

More revelations of Firefox 1.0 PR RC I've discovered so far, most of which are positive:

Mozilla Firefox now shows an editable URL location field on all windows even in pop-up windows where the menu bar and toolbars are hidden. You can demonstrate this feature to yourself by executing the links to SillyDog701 on this page.

Also, I had noticed that earlier browser releases based on Mozilla 1.7.x had a minor problem with site icons disappearing from the location field after moving from one tab to another and back again.

Firefox now displays a yellow bar across the top of a page with the text "Firefox prevented this site from opening a popup window. Click here for options..." when a page attempts to display an unrequested pop-up window. It is very easy to configure Firefox not to display this bar if you do not wish to see it.

Yet another change is that the conventional "Find in this page" dialog box has been replaced by a Find bar along the bottom edge of the screen. I'm less convinced that this is an improvement, but it is simple to use and I do like the new Highlight feature.

This release is on the same development branch as the earlier Firefox 0.9.x releases and future Firefox releases through 1.0. I haven't noticed any critical bugs or stability problems as of yet, and I consider this release superior to Mozilla Firefox 0.9.3. Can't wait until the final version!

Andrew,

I agree with you on the "Find in this page" toolbar. I don't care for that at all. Reduces the page's real estate too much for my taste. Sort of like Opera when all Toolbars are enabled. I LIKE the blocked popup for now, but can see how it could become annoying.

Have you noted the small icon (paint palette) in the lower right corner of this page? It is: "Switch to an alternate page style", SD701 default - Large fonts. Cool! I didn't see that using Mozilla.

I miss the New Tab icon on my Tab Bar. I did try to drag one to the Tab Bar, but it wound up on the Personal Toolbar. I'll have to fiddle with that a bit more. This version is definitely faster than Mozilla, but that was expected. The final version will indeed be quite impressive. I'm liking it better and better...

Ramona

P.S. Found the New Tab button in the "Customize" option, but then found that a CTRL+Click does the same thing.
