I cannot run most of the programs on my computer now

Postby Kangster » Wed 13 Oct, 2004 3:28 pm

Hi guys,
About 2 or 3 days ago, i realized that I got a virus. Because when I go to run Call of Duty, the command prompt thing came up for a flash second then it just disapeared, and nothing else happened, samething happens when i tried clicking on it again, and now, non of my additional programs work, like all my games, winrar, dvd player, just about anything I installed. Anyone know what is wrong? Or how I can get rid of the virus?
Thanks a lot guys

I downloaded "HijackThis" and the samething happend(command prompt came up for a sec). BTW, I doubt is from the internet because the other day, my friend got the same problem and that's right after copying some files from a disk, and this happened to me right after I copied the stuff from that disk. Oh yea, the program we copied didn't work either, the command crap popped up.
Thanks for your suggestion though

That depends on what virus you have. Since you're using IE, go to www.mcafee.com and run FreeScan (that may take an hour) to see what you have, then see if they give you an option to download a free removal tool.
After that, in addition to Al's comment about running Firefox instead of IE, buy a good antivirus program and keep it updated.

Well, even if it's not from the Internet, maintaining a good anti-virus utility can still help. And, Firefox is a more secure browser anyway.

The advice you've received should be heeded. NEVER fly without an antivirus running and up to date. McCaffee, Norton - both excellent, I happen to prefer McCaffee. You can even download a free antivirus from www.grisoft.com, which is better than nothing at all. Sounds like you've got a file that needs to be quarantined and quickly.

Are you sure you're running HijackThis properly? Are sure you've even got HijackThis?

When you run HijackThis, you should get a window that looks like this . . .

After it's checked your system, you should then see something like this . . .

(Screengrabs taken from - http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ . . . )

When you run a HijackThis scan, you'll get a file called "hijackthis.log" with the scan results.

You don't realize that you have a virus, but, you prove it. So, pay attention to what was said by others.
Next you mention a bunch of programs, but none of them are run of the mill. You must have something else on your computer. Even Internet Explorer, which you are using now.
Did this just happened. You say that this was not from the Internet. Did you install the program(s) from something which came from a box?

Suggest you do the following..........

Postby Blackbeard » Sun 17 Oct, 2004 9:33 pm

In addition to running Hijack this and a good, reputable up to the minute Virus scan program such as McAfee virusScan online (best software investment I've made to date! ). Download both SpyBot and ad-aware, Spyware Blaster and a program called registry mechanic........ All are free and with the exception of registry mechanic all run without time restrictions.............

At least we might be able to fix the problem for free and you can worry about the rest later.................

Install all of them and update them all with the latest definitions......

When Done run spybot first................ leave on automatic and run a full scan! Delete everything it comes back with............. Reboot if necessary to remove all nasties...........

Next do exactly the same thing with ad-aware. There is a step by step guide on what to do posted in the forums at geeks to go!!!!

when you've made that pass then run registry mechanic which will clear up anything the other too have missed........................

This way you will at least significantly clean up you registry and that's a good start....

Next of run the Spyare Blaster Program and download its updates........... make sure you visit all the tabs and thatall entries are checked...... Restricted Sites/ I Explorer etc..........................

When all of that has been accompished you will have a fairly immune system................. Run a complete Virus Scan Check and see what you come back with!!!! If clear do a defrag on your Hard Drive...............

Like you my friend, I like gaming a lot and have been severly hijacked in recent days from a number of Inououcs sites....................... This is a bit of a tedious process but believe me well worth doing!!!! I'm currently in the Middle of Doom 3 and can sleep a l ittle easier knowing my machine is pretty healthy and my programs for the most part are working for now at least.....

Aldso recommend you download the Mozilla Firefox Browse and use it as your default browser................. you can import your favourites from IE...
Even With SP2 installed IE is like a leaky bucket!!!!!

After a while you get sick and tired of writing different speeches about various spyware tools, so you come up with something like this:

Get and run ALL of the following .. ALL 6 of them! Each cleans a different type of problem, and although there is some overlap, the only way to be sure, is use ALL OF THEM!

1) A good antivirus program (Norton or Trend for example)
2) Spybot S&D ( http://security.kolla.de/ )
3) Ad-Adaware ( www.lavasoft.de )
4) The Cleaner ( www.moosoft.com )
5) SpywareBblaster ( http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/ )
6) Hijack This! ( http://209.133.47.200/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe )

ALL of them! All but Norton are free and can be found on Google. UPDATE each after installing them!
