I have a 10.2.4 Mac OS X cd's and installed successfully, updated to 10.2.8 ( just for fun). Installing 10.3 now. I will be trying 10.4 possibly... =) All with only 160MB RAM and 10GB HD =:0]. If everything goes well, I will get more ram. Oh and I installed a usb pci card worded like a charm in 10.2.4. Big trackball mouse I broke =\ but I need/wanted USB so... =)

EDIT: going from 10.2.8 -> 10.3 didn't work to well, got the "restart screen" with XPF 3.1, I might try the beta 4 version and go from 10.2.4 -> 10.3.

It seems that you are looking for The Desktop Thread, located in the General Computing and Tech Forum.

PowerMac G3 Memory Mystery

Postby DJGM » Mon 27 Jun, 2005 4:12 pm

This is abit strange . . . I have 512MB of physical RAM installed on this computer. One is a stick
of 256MB, the other two are 128MB each. So why does "About This Mac" now show this . . . ?

Image

96MB RAM seems to have mysteriously disappeared. What gives . . . ?

Does the computer have an integrated graphics card? There may be a possibility that 96 MB may be used in a graphics card.

The system does have onboard graphics, but it's only 6MB! Anyway, the problem is sorted,
since I just rebooted the system, and the RAM situation is back to normal. Which doesn't
explain where that 96MB RAM went to. Is the failure of one of the RAM sticks imminent?

After that, run the XPostFacto application to get Mac OS X 10.3 Panther to install.

BTW, how big is the HDD on the system in question? If it's still the original 4GB one that was
shipped with the system, then I'd recommend getting a larger capacity HDD. At least 10GB
should be sufficient. Once that 4GB HDD has Mac OS X installed upon it, you'll soon find
it'll get filled very quickly, expecially when (eventually) successfully install Panther.

DJGM, I would like to thank you again for you help. I finally got 10.3.9 up and running, all I need is some more ram, and possibly a little bigger hd and I will be set. Have you tried 10.4 yet?

Congratulations for finally getting Panther up and running on your (no longer supported) G3!
Getting RAM shouldn't be much of a problem. Standard PC100 SDRAM should do the trick.

I haven't got a copy of Tiger yet, but I'll have it eventually. Here's hoping it works . . . !

DJGM wrote:Ok, here's my latest report - and a problem . . .

I've now installed a spare 10GB (it actually registers as 9.3GB) HDD in this PowerMac G3 system, and after
a lot of time and energy, I've finally got it up and running with Mac OS 10.3.7. Now since Mac OS X cannot
be installed on any partition over 8GB in size on certain (mostly older) machines, I don't think I'll bother
to install any larger HDD on it than the 10GB/9.3GB HDD it now has installed.

The next obstacle, is to transfer close to 2GB worth of files from my main PC, over to this PowerMac G3.
Amongst other things, this includes the Mozilla and Netscape profiles I'm currently using on Windows XP.
(I can't exactly use the internet for this task. I neither have the time, nor the available webspace!)

I have the USB2.0 PCI card installed and working fine. It has a 2 button scrollwheel USB mouse plugged
into it. It also has an external HDD enclosure plugged in to it, that allows a standard internal IDE HDD to
become an external HDD. I also have the 4GB HDD that was originally installed inside my G3 iMac.

Now, my problem is to get it to "mount" on Windows and on Mac OS X. But which filesystem can I use
that will enable either OS to "mount" the HDD? The Macintosh HFS+ filesystem won't work in Windows
and likewise, the Windows native filesystems of FAT32 and NTFS won't work in Mac OS X.

The only other method I can think of for transferring the data, is to have both the Mac and PC running
side by side, and network them both together. Problem is, I don't have enough space on my desk for
two computers and two monitors. nor do I have enough plug sockets in this room.

Any suggestions folks . . . ?

At least in 10.4, i think 10.3, ntfs works read-only, fat32 works. I use a PC HD with my Mac at regular occasions.

Now that I'm getting a Blue + White PowerMac G3, I've decided that one of the others has got to go!
It's likely that the one most likely to go (either for re-sale on eBay or just given away) will be the
beige Power Macintosh G3 minitower I bought from another eBay seller a few months ago.

I intend to keep the iMac G3 that I bought in 2001. I intend to install Ubuntu Linux on that at some
point in the not too distant future. I'm also keeping the beige Power Macintosh G3 desktop unit
that I acquired for free from a former workplace last year, which will have Mac OS X 10.3.9
re-installed on it, as soon as I've got a new (but not completely new) 10GB HDD for it.

That Mac has official support for Tiger :) Nice win for that price.

Congratulations, and if my calculation is correct, you now have 3 G3s?

It'll be four G3's by the time this one arrives! But, like I said, I'm giving away (or selling) one of the others.
That doesn't mean I don't like the one I'm thinking of getting rid of. It's getting to the point where I have
too many computers! There's a my main PC, my iMac G3, the "testbed" PC, an obsolete Pentium Pro
based PC that I've never gotten to work properly (and which may be thrown out soon) gathering
dust in a cupboard, the PowerMac G3 beige desktop, and the PowerMac G3 beige minitower!

There's only so many computers that your average semi detached former council house can have!

Do you mind giving us a table of all specs of those 4 G3s?
