Mozilla Firefox 1.0 Release Candidate 1 available

Postby Andrew T. » Wed 27 Oct, 2004 6:08 pm

The first release candidates for Mozilla Firefox 1.0 have been released. The front page of mozilla.org hasn't been changed yet to reflect this, but the releases are available from Mozilla's FTP server.

I presume that most of the development in this stage has been devoted to bug-fixing as opposed to major feature development. A change log of approximately 250 bugs remedied since Mozilla Firefox 1.0 PR would appear to testify to this.

These releases have been conceived for testing purposes, to weed out any potentially detrimental bugs before the final version of Mozilla Firefox 1.0 is released.

Asa Dotzler notes: "If you've already downloaded 1.0 PR (the "feature complete" preview) and you're not particularly interested in active testing and bug reporting, then you should probably stick with 1.0 PR for a couple more weeks and upgrade when we release the official Firefox 1.0."

Some changes I have noticed in Firefox 1.0 RC1 over 1.0 PR:

One of the more significant is that Mozilla Firefox now has the ability to force links that open new windows to open in a new tab or in the same active window. This option is found in the "Advanced" section of Preferences, under Tabbed Browsing.

Apparently, "focus interaction between tabs" has been changed to fix the security vulnerabilities publicized earlier.

Live Bookmarks now carry a special icon, also seen on the status bar when a site carries an appropriate RSS feed to subscribe to:

The close button for the Find bar has moved from the right end to the left end, on the Mac version anyway.

Also regarding the Mac port: Finally, the "hidden window in Mozilla products" Antony noted earlier, visible on Firefox 1.0 PR and earlier versions when using the Exposé feature of Mac OS X 10.3, appears to have disappeared on Mozilla Firefox 1.0 RC1. Firefox's interface and performance on the Mac platform is definately improving with each successive version, although it could still benefit from further development to be fully competitive with Mac OS X-native browsers such as Safari.

Finally, the pop-up blocker in Mozilla Firefox 1.0 RC1 appears to be more reliable than the one in Firefox 1.0 PR.

Cool! That's a cool new feature!

I will do more testing to see if it complies with the Apple Human Interface Guideline. However, it is good to know those Hidden Windows are now disappeared.

According to your useragent string, you've got the recent Firefox 1.0PR (or 0.10.1) build.
The Mozilla Firefox 1.0 release candidate builds are available on the Mozilla.org FTP site.

Here's the installer for Firefox 1.0RC1 . . . and here's the zipfile. Both run on Windows.

Thanks, Greg. Let's look at the UA string again.

Firefox 1.0 Release Candidate 1 Available

<snip>
a note to SFX community: This is a testing release. This is not a product release. We're not pushing this release on our PR users. The majority of PR users should stick with PR until 1.0 ships. This is a testing release and we don't need everyone downloading it, just the folks that want to be involved with testing and bug reporting. Please don't evangelize this release or start pushing all your friends and family to upgrade. Most of them should wait until 1.0 in about two weeks.

And, in case anyione has been using extentions, going from PR to RC was enough to invalidate them. I really feel for those guys who work on extentions!

I've tested Mozilla Firefox 1.0 Release Candidate 1 on Windows, and most of my observations about features and changes in the Mac version also carry over to this port. The icon for a Live Bookmark is slightly different, and the individual items in such an RSS feed do not carry special icons. Additionally, I noticed that the Windows installer is now decorated with great Firefox-exclusive graphics:

No official release notes (as far as I know) - those will come with 1.0. However, presuming you're interested to know what's changed since the preview release, there is the rough changelog (linked from "250 bug fixes" in the article), and you can also look at "what's new in 1.0" at http://www.squarefree.com/burningedge/releases/1.0.html for highlights.

Lots more in the mozillazine talkback article.

I think Firefox 1.0RC2 is only a nightly or testing build. It is not currently at the Firefox releases page at ftp.mozilla.org yet. You could search around the Firefox nightly builds page for 1.0RC2 nigthlies if you are confortable using the nightly builds.
