Really Tiny Printing (7.02)

Postby lindenhills » Wed 03 Nov, 2004 5:21 pm

Dear 'Scapers:

In just the last few days I've a recurring problem that I cannot fix.

Most emails when sent to the printer come through in the type size and font that I have set as default through Preferences.

Some, however, are now coming through in reeeeeeeeally tiny type, almost impossible to read.

I cannot fax these docs to clients, who could read them? Yet I cannot figure out how such a command is being sent to the printer to make them look this way. There is no pattern to it.

Advice? :(

Either you can upgrade to Netscape 7.2 or please check [sdt=2143]printing from email = very small type size[/sdt] (thread).

As noted in my subject heading, I am already using 7.2.

And even worse, that thread you directed me to was my own horrific descent into software manipulation agony which never was resolved. If you read the thread to its awful end, I just sort of...drifted away (with a very bad headache).

Am I out of options?

I thought I read 7.02 instead.

There should be an easier way for this... Let me search for it.

The "Minimum font size" pref set in the browser (Edit Menu -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Fonts -> Minimum font size) also applies to messages. Is that no help?

Every possible manipulation of the Preferences options has been tried.

I have had one interesting insight: when a URL is part of the message--particularly a long link string--there seems to be a 'shrink' event command sent to the printer, or rather the page is compacted when I send the Print command.

Don't use that feature. I couldn't get that right. (Can't really trust the Preview).

Not sure what you mean there. I am not "using any feature," it is just happening all by itself.

My point was that, when an email message contains a longish URL string in the text area, and I send that email message to the printer, something happens that causes all the type in that message to get tiny. As in miniature. As in reallllly small.

Could you send an example? I have never seen this behavior.
I think is referring to the Print Preview. I don't think that it is so unreliable. The print size is not changing for me, but the number of pages may not correspond to what you see, but looking at the page number, Print Preview is very reliable.
I have been using two HP printers: a very aging 695, and a new 1315 combo, and they behave well.

Sending you a sample means faxing you an email recently run to the printer....glad to do so if it helps.

I don't want to see what you see. I believe you. But, I would like to see what I get. The only time I saw a tiny print was it was tiny from the start. It looks tiny when I first view it, and in Print Preview.
The problem is that you say that "some" come out tiny.
Let me tell youwhat I did, with the single small print e-mail , which I had received. In Mail, I selected View|Simple HTML, and the print type about doubled. It may not look at pretty, and you will not get images, but it is immensely more legible. Selecting Plain text has the same effect, but I have had only this odd e-mail.
I don't know what trying to FAX would do, but give it a shot.

One more time: the problem is not in the viewing on the monitor. The problem is in the message being sent to the PRINTER from the Netscape settings that tells the printer to shrink the text to a very small size.

I'm going to sign off on this issue, many thanks to all 'Scapers for their help!

" In Mail, I selected View|Simple HTML, and the print type about doubled."

When I say Print type, I mean using the Printer. Have you tried this or not?
I understand what you are saying.

"Mail" as in the Preferences options?

Or "View" while working in the email window?

In either instance, there is no option in either for what you indicate...now what?

 Sigh.......

Sorry, I left out an important in-between. In the e-mail window:
