Mozilla 1.7.3, Firefox 1.0 PR, Thunderbird 0.8 released!

Postby Andrew T. » Tue 14 Sep, 2004 10:21 am

Big news: There are three new software releases from Mozilla.org today.

Mozilla (Suite) 1.7.3. This is presumably another minor update in the Mozilla 1.7.x series.

Mozilla Firefox 1.0 Preview Release. New features include the ability to subscribe to RSS feeds in bookmarks, the Find bar, a split pane view in the Bookmarks menu, the capability to create a "Master Password," more reliable presentation of site icons, and better system integration for GNOME users. The extensions system now will not automatically install software from sites other than update.mozilla.org.

This was foreshadowed by the 1.0PR Release Candidate quietly released a couple of days ago. I noted my impressions of some of these new features in the aforementioned thread.

Also, Mozilla Thunderbird 0.8 has been released. Some new features in this release include a global inbox, data migration features from other software, a built-in RSS reader, improved privacy controls, and improved search.

A note on in the documentation states:
"Upgraders: DO NOT install Mozilla Thunderbird into a directory containing program files from a previous version."

"DO NOT install Mozilla Thunderbird into a directory containing program files from a previous version. "

This is from the website. I guess it never dawned on them to state first that the old version should be uninstalled.
And, what happens with nightlies which are not installed? I work out of an unzipped file.

The only "bug" or other problem I've noticed so far is that the designation [tt]"en-US"[/tt] is missing from my Firefox user agent string. Is this exclusive to me, or has this practice been discontinued outright?

I have been spending most of the morning getting 1.7.3 to the same conditions as 1.7.2, to no avail. Connection to mozdev.org has been anywhere from non-existant to giving me timeouts. I was hoping to use jar files which were in the Profile(I thought that there was a good reason for it). The home button failed to show up, I had lost the skypilot theme, and when I used the theme installer It created a duplicate of the same file, and then told me that it was an old file, and offered to uninstall it. It was never install in 1.7.3, and did nothing to the .jar files in the Profile. Of course I have no Prefbar, nor Autoscroll.
I can understand that, probably, every one is trying to access mozdev.org, but I cannot access some sites which are in my Tab list.
I was able to install Autoscroll and Prefbar, but the Home button seems to like to install in the default browser. So, I will have to do without it for a while. 1.7.3 seems ok now.

Firefox 1.0 PR Mac OS X still has the [sdt=6349]mysterious "hidden" window[/sdt] exhibited in OS X 'Panther' :panther:

As for the Apple HIG, I will verify that when I have time.

One thing noticed, the "tab" feature now looks a lot better, with better OS X (Panther) style.

Yes, but what's different about it? And why don't they explain what's different on the Mozilla site? (I looked all over, but all I could find were general notes on v1.7+.)

I usually download each new Mozilla version---but as far as I know, you have to uninstall the previous version, then install the new one, and set everything else back up again (themes, third-party plug-ins, etc.).

Before I do all this again, I'd sure like to know why I'm doing it. Is there no way to find out? (And is there still no way to upgrade without having to start over?)

The improved looking tab under Panther :panther:

As for the Apple HIG issue, the test one by me failed.

I did eventually find the release notes for Mozilla 1.7.3 detailing changes to the software since version 1.7.2. Here they are, reproduced in their entirety:

Mozilla 1.7.3 is a security update to Mozilla 1.7 that fixes a several security vulnerabilities.

These fixed security issues are listed in this thread.

Ack, some serious-looking stuff. Well, maybe I'm missing something, but wouldn't it be a good idea for the Mozilla guys to give us a clue, rather than just quietly changing the version number?

And do we still have to uninstall and reinstall the whole app, themes, plugins, etc. each time? As long as they're fixing stuff, an "update" option would be swell.

Okay, I found the little "a", but how do I make the circle around it?

Okay, actually, I just installed 1.7.3, and it remembered everything---because I didn't delete my Mozilla folder after the 1.7.2 uninstall. Guess I should've done that (that is, not done that) the other times too. (Only the wonderful Preferences Toolbar had to be reinstalled from mozdev.org, and it even remembered its settings.)

So disregard my previous grousing. It'd still be nice if the Mozilla site would make it easier to see the version changes, though.

By the way, I've just noticed all this blue-and-white theming, little blue bubbles, screenshots of Mozilla running on Macs... Is this, like, a Mac-oriented website? I thought it was just for the Mozilla-family apps in general.

So you allow people who run Windows to post here? Even if they don't have, you know, the little icons that jump up and down at the bottom of the screen, app windows that take over the whole desktop, etc.?

Firefox 1.0 PR is an excellent browser, it's a small 4.5mb download, and is very fast. :D

Don't worry, we're still a forum that's focused primarily to helping out with Mozilla and Netscape
related browser issues, and promoting alternatives to IE. The proliferation of Mac screengrabs
is due to the owner of this message board (Antony) being a big fan of Macintosh, and Apple
stuff in general. I too, am a Mac user. I'm also a Windows user. And a Linux user.

Users of all operating systems and computing platforms are welcome here at SD701!

Meanwhile . . . regarding the new version of Firefox . . .

I've just installed Mozilla Firefox 1.0PR on a (workplace) PC running Windows NT4. Looking at the entry
for Mozilla Firefox in the - Start - Programs - menu, there's an entry for "Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)".

Here's a screengrab:

Image

I've not gotten round to installing Mozilla Firefox 1.0PR on my own PC yet, so I don't know if this
odd entry appears for any installations of Mozilla Firefox 1.0PR on any other version of Windows.
