Like slimbrowser etc that uses files from MSIE.

To quote from two posts above yours...

Joris Evers wrote:While current Firefox users may switch to IE when they have a problem with a Web site, AOL's Netscape unit found a different solution. If a Web site does not display well in the standard Firefox-based configuration in Netscape, it takes two clicks to display the page using the IE engine. The browser stores engine preferences per Web site.

The Netscape browser does not actually include the IE engine, but uses the engine that is part of Windows. As such, the browser only works on Windows computers.

The MSIE rendering engine is running anyway whenever you run Windows operating system (version 98 and later). It does not include the MSIE engine, but uses it.

No.
Netscape is based on Firefox.

north450 wrote:That would suggest the new prototype will be using fles from MSIE and this would infer that netscape will be running in the background.
The balance of power would be disturbed.
correct me if i am wrong.
No.
Netscape is based on Firefox.
However, the MSIE rendering is running by the Windows operating system, it's always there, and any programme can use it.

So when certain sites can't display "correctly", you can choose to "Display like in Internet Explorer". The setting is configured individually by each site. That option is provided as when necessary.

I, just had an interesting experience with http://icebergradio , a Canadian music site. For some reason, although it is said to work best with NS7.1 or later, it does not, but it works fine wih Firefox, to the point that I, successfully, faked the firefox user agent, when I used NS7.2. And, it plays fine with the NS Browser. however, no artist or song info is available (it is in IE). When I use the View like IE, the player does nothing.

I can't belive they still use 0.9.3!!! That build was more than 3 months old! The some of the option dialouge's are really bloated, which most users will not prefer. I don't see the point for thoese weather, ticker, news. The theme is sort of nice, but no about:mozilla! That is just not okay. I think AOL is trying to make Firefox a failure, and like a Avant/Silm/Neo/Crazy like browser that uses IE! I think even Opera/Moz or Kon/Moz or Sai/Moz

I quickly used it for about 10 minutes, and here are my first impressions:

- The top portion with the toolbars, tab bar, RSS feeds, the default big icons are just too busy. Since all these are kind of mixed together with the same green dotted background it is hard to find the information you're looking for.

- The pull-down menus is locating on the right instead of the standard left.

- The browser with the default skin/theme seems to be a bit slow to response/refresh to mouse clicks/actions.

- The Display like IE feature works well. I think it's a nice touch.

- Site Control may take a little bit to get use to.

In Firefox a little image is displayed, when RSS or Live Bookmark is available / can be added to the page.
How can I manipulate with RSS / Live Bookmarks in this "thing"?
I also hate the fact, that on pages displayed correctly (without any problems) in Firefox 1.0 SLO, I am keep on receiving "The Document contains no data!" warning :x !

To add:
It is nice, that I will be able to abandon IE once for all.
I just tried Windows Update service from Microsoft with "Display like IE" and it is working.

The "Display like IE" option crashes Netscape Browser on Win 98 SE (with IE 5.0 and 6.0), but works ok on my friend's XP box...

What video card do you have? If it's integrated, that'll take one to 64 megs of RAM (depending on model and situation). Most likely, your card is stealing 1MB from the system, so Windows only HAS 63.

I downoladed the setup program, and ran the [tt]NSbrowserSetup-Full.exe[/tt] and I then recived a nice little dialouge box informing me that I don't meet the minimum system requirements of a 233MHz processor, 64MB RAM, and 35MB of Hard Drive space. I belive I meet the requirements. The only possible explanation could be that Windows reads I have 63MB of RAM, when in reality I have 64MB, and this is causing the setup program to give me the error, and quit.

You know, I'm not sure if this goes here and I sorta doubt that Netscape would listen to this, but I like Opera's color customizations... you know where you can choose a theme and then on top of that give it different color overlays? Good stuff there. I'd like to see it implemented in Netscape (or Mac OS X in general).

Although it is correct that the Browser is based on a 0.9.x Firefox, they also say that the final release will be based on 1.0. It is just a Prototype, and it must not be construed as the final version, in any way. I should be able to dig out this info, if others can't.
My only experience with View as IE was a bust. I tried that at this Canadian music site, and it looks fine, and their internal player works, but it gives no info about Artist or Song.
This info is available in the player. I thought that a simple change to View as IE would do the job. Not so. Not only I could not see anything, but it would not play.
I don't know what the feature is supposed to do. I did not make it that it was a version of IE in disguise.
Finally, one feature of NS Browser which I did not like was the fact that my folders in the personal toolbar were not available. Quite accidentally I found that the customize|drag "Bookmark Toolbar Items" onto the toolbar. And, there they are. I kicked out almost anything pre-given.
I am getting used to this critter, and hope any improvements will be real,
contrasted with AOL improvements.

I am not impressed at all

As a long time NN user and promoter I am dissapointed with this "prototype", the interface is esthetically horrible and when compared to FF not very useful/practical. I feel like being transported in time to 2000 and watching N6 and not believing my eyes, so lest hope it will be improved more than version 6 which was in my eyes crap. The most stupid thing for me is that while NN7.x was "fully compatible" with Mozilla 1.x so plugins, themes, localizations etc. could be used, this piece will not accept any of the popular themes nor plugins for FF from update.mozilla.org. And when I just think about the point that it actually launches MSIE and it was made by some outsorcers I am depressed and I think I will have to leave NN after almost 10 years. Very sad -but I still hope although I know it is not very realistic. BTW for those of you who actually didnt have the possibility to "to touch" this piece, try

Does this prototype also include Mail & News, or is it just a browser?
