Address Book Lost after upgrading to Netscape 7.2

Postby pmerv » Mon 22 Nov, 2004 2:53 pm

I had a bit of trouble getting up and running with Netscape 7.2. Now it works but my address books are a total blank. I read a previous question on this forum but was not able to follow the directions. I fished my previous Netscape 7.0 out of the recycle bin, but by now it also has a blank address book, so I can't simply export it. However if I go into Explorer application data/mozilla/users50/default/7zddhptg.slt, I can see several .mab files and a few mab.baks also. Some are a decent size (>300kb) which makes me hope they may be my missing address books. When I click on the icon, they open in netscape and some of them appear to have my stuff in them. However, how do I get them to go where I want them, i.e. into my new netscape where I can use them? Am I on the right track, and can anyone help me get my address books working again? I hope I am correct that they didn't get totally lost. If I do get them back I will be sure to back them up (I assume I can do that by exporting to a different folder?).
Thanks for any help.

This should a required reading. The program should be removed, and if you used the Add/Remove as required, I am not sure what you were fishing out.
The path which you gave is that of a Netscape6.x profile (the Users 50 gives it away), but the files to copy are the .mab indeed. You should also have a Profile folder for NS7.x, if not you should create a new one create you mail account(s) and then Paste the files which you copied into it. 300Kb is a pretty good size file.
After you got everything in place make sure that Tools|Export as a .ldif file your Address Book(s) as a backup.
If you did not uninstall 7.0, I would start working my way back, removing 7.2 first, etc., uninstall 7.0, and then reinstall 7.2. Or be prepared for problems in the future.

Fulvio,

I am trying to figure out your instructions. Thank you for taking the time to answer. I may be back later.

Take my directions one part at a time. First the first three line. The rest comes later, except that I am trying to figure out how the User50 folder comes into the picture, since it is a Netscape6.x folder.

missing address book

Postby pmerv » Sat 27 Nov, 2004 12:22 am

Fulvio, I am amazed that I now have an operating 7.2.

Following your directions I copied all the .slt folder contents into a new pop3 folder and lo and behold, all old messages (inbox etc) appeared.

I finally gave up on importing the address books although I learned a lot about the internal workings of my computer. It turns out the files were corrupted. I did everything you said and still could not import them. My husband was able to import part of the big one. I had been having problems with them for some time. Next time that happens I will not wait before trying to fix the problem. I will also back them up periodically by exporting as .ldif. I was able to manually rescue some of the data however.

One remaining problem, I am not sure if it is serious: under C:\Program Files\Netscape I now have Netscape, Netscape 6, Netscape 7, and Netscape 7.2 folders, even though I did uninstall 7.2 and 7.0 as you instructed. I have now got 3 uninstall programs. If I click on any of them, each asks me if I want to uninstall 7.2. I was not able to get rid of Netscape 6, as I still have Netscp.exe and the folder is still quite full of other stuff as well, especially .dll files. The uninstall exe in that folder only wants to uninstall 7.2, not 6. How do I get rid of 6? The Netscape 7 folder is pretty much emptied out. Since the reinstallation of 7.2 appears to have created its own Netscape folder instead of putting everything into the 7.2 folder I thought I was using, is it safe just to delete the 7.2 folder which hardly has anything in it?

thanks again.

It depends on what NS6 you have. Only the latest one should have an uninstaller file or folder. If all three have the uninstaller, it means that they were not properly removed. I, still, have a Netscape and a Netscape6 folder in the mail Netscape folder. The only one which has the full complement of files is Communicator, i.e.4.8. The other two folder have a chrome or components folder with very little little in them, and the plugins folder which has .dll files. This stuff is expected to be there, since it can be reused, especially the plugins.
I don't understand what you are saying about NS7.2. It will go wherever it say at the beginning of the installation. I am not sure about this, because I always make sure that I know where it fgoes, and, I select the folder, and rename it if necessary. The most important things is that you should have a folder in this path: application data/mozilla/profiles/default .
Earlier you said that you have a Users50 folder. Do you have also a Profiles folder. That's the one you want. In an earlier post, you said that you fished out of the recycle folder NS7.0, but that it did not have the Address book. It never had any address book. It should have been in the the Profile folder. Don't worry about anything which has only a few folders like I said, but you have to be concerned about any program which has the netscp.exe file. If more than one program has it, it means that it was improperly uninstalled. Nothing should be in the Recycle folder, unless you put it there. And, finally, only one program did not have an uninstaller. That was Netscape6.0. It was such a long time that I had it, that I am not 100% sure that I remember how to remove it.
But, you have many possibilities of having messed up, from what I gather.
