NS 7.2 failed install

Postby dobrphi » Thu 25 Nov, 2004 3:45 pm

I had a problem with my PC and had to have it rebuilt. When it came back I didn't have any Netscape on it. I decided to download NS 7.2 . Everything seemed to go along quite nicely until what seemed to be the end. Then I got an error message saying 'NETSCAP.EXE' did not load and an error log was created. Before the rebuild I was running NS 7.1 and I had a great deal of difficulty getting at jpg, gif, etc type files. A popup would continually come up saying NETSCAP.EXE could not be found. I couldn't deal with jpg, gif, etc files. I would like to nip this in the bud and end up with a clean install. I'd appreciate any help I can get. If you need log files or whatever, please let me know. I'm running NT 4.0 . Thanks. Don

1. See Ramona's Performing a "Clean" Install for Netscape 7.xx or Mozilla 1.xx for Clean Install advice.

2. I hope the message that you are getting really refers to "Netscp.exe", not the "Netscap.exe" that you mentioned. I do not believe that "Netscap.exe" exits.

3. You eventually need to re-associate your JPG (and other) files to a program other than the Netscape browser. Good threads to read are two olds one which I believe that you may find helpful.

netscp.exe...what is it??? Using 4.8

You're quite right. It is Netscp.exe without the 'a'. I finally found the file, but I still don't understand why Netscape can't find it.

That problem is minor incomparison to a new one I'm experiencing. The system takes FOREVER to respond to anything! Between the time I hilight a message in my Inbox and press 'enter' and the time it comes up on the screen is about 30 - 45 seconds. It's the same thing when I press the 'delete' icon or drag the entry to a folder. Everything is in ultra slow motion. When I was using NS 7.1, I never had such problems. Should I just forget about NS 7.2 and go back to what seems to be a more reliable release?

Thanks.

Don: Is Windows bringing up this error message when you double click on an image file or does the message come up while running Netscape?

What "usually" occurs is that a version of Netscape "takes over" the job of opening picture files with a suffix of JPG or GIF. Windows will then attempt to run the Netscape executable ("Netsp.exe" in Netscape 7.x, "Netscape.exe" in Netscape 4.x) in order to open these image files. If the location of "Netscp.exe" has moved, Windows will present an error message saying that it could not find "Netscp.exe."

You probably do not want Netscape to open image files on your hard drive and need to "associate" the image files with the proper imaging software. If this is indeed the case, then see my first link above (which mistakenly had pointed to the incorrect SillyDog thread before I corrected it). Please take a look at netscp.exe...what is it??? Using 4.8 which "sort of" explains a problem similar to yours.

Please post your other problem in a new thread so that you might attract answers to that "new" problem.

Thanks for the info. I'll take a read and see if there is anything there to help me out.

Don,
you get an error like you say when the program is not installed, or may be only partly installed. See if there is anything about Netscape 7.1 and/or 7.2 in the Add/Remove, try to uninstall. When you are done try to reinstall.
All your personal settings will be ok.
