7.0 won't download files

Postby stuartmac » Sun 16 Jan, 2005 1:22 pm

I had a fatal disk error, and so deleted all data, reloading the software including operating system. Since then Netscape won’t save files. Never had this problem previously. Tried (twice!) resetting all preferences, reloading operating system and Netscape. No difference. Checked Sillydog forum (mostly 2003) and Bugzilla. Both discuss this as a reported bug for Navigator (7.1) and equivalent Mozilla. It’s due to corruption of file COMPREG.DAT and is cured temporarily by deleting that file, although there doesn’t seem to be a permanent cure other than using a later version.

Trouble is, I’m using an iMac, not a pc! (Netscape 7.02, MacOs 8.6) I can’t trace any suggestion of a cure for a Mac, temporary or otherwise, although it’s clearly the same fault as that described for the pc Navigator/Mozilla versions.

Does anybody out there know the Mac cure, or can perhaps at least tell me what the Mac equivalent of COMPREG.DAT is called, and I can always try deleting that. Thanks

ps: Yes, I know I should buy a new iMac, but they’re 50% more expensive in UK!

If no Mac expert shows up, I will have to get someone. But, do you know where your profile is located? in OS9, it is in (xxxx is a random alphanumeric set: boot_disk:Documents:Mozilla:/User/xxxxxxxx.slt. You file should be there. However, from what you describe, I am not sure what you did. Did you remove the profile? In other words, are you down to square one?
It seems that you have a profile, or you would not be able to start. So?

Can you cite the bug numbers and maybe the old sillydog threads? If the bug reports determined where the code problem is then someone might be able to come up with a workaround. Thanks!

The bug numbers may not apply to all versions. You are using 7.02, and a Mac. You actually have only one profile, i.e. default, which is standard.
The first one may be associated with a Netscape4.x. The second one is charactistic of a version 6 or 7, since it is associated with .slt folder.
I will have to ask some Mac expert, because, if if you started from scratch, the only impediment to software installation would be the setting in your Preferences|Advanced|Software installations.

I see that you are using Mac Os 8.6 which is very different from Mac OSX, what I use here (hubby has the Ibook, actually).

You really should give more information regarding your exact download problem and any error messages. A link to the problem downlad would also help.

I'm not a Mac expert by any stretch but here are my suggestions.

In OSX, the entire Netscape application is compressed inside a single .app "file" so you don't see individual files such as compreg.dat that you can easily find. So, the best method of replacing the program files would be to delete the Netscape 7.0x app from your hard drive, and then reinstall it.

Other download problems could be a profile issue, such as corrupted downloads.rdf file or an errant helper application (mimetypes.rdf file). Both can be renamed or deleted with Netscape closed and new, empty versions will be regenerated

If removing the entire Netscape application and reinstalling doesn't help then I would either delete or rename the downloads.rdf and mimetypes.rdf files from the profile's xxxxxxxx.SLT folder , OR, create a new profile for testing purposes. In OSX, there is a Profile Manager icon in the Application folder for Netscape 7.0x, or you can press the Option key while you double-click the Netscape icon.

Reference Alice Wyman’s posting:

1. Thanks for the comments

2. It’s my understanding that systemX is unix-based and quite different from previous MacOs. I don't think it matters in this case, since it seems clear that this same problem occurs under several OS, both pc and mac and therefore the problem is surely with those Navigator versions rather than the OS.

3. More information: There was no problem with Navigator 7.02 until I had to reload it. Before that I usually downloaded to the hard disk and then unpacked (stuffit lite 6.5.1). After the reload this simply didn’t work. Attemping to file downloads (usually with Save As ...) resulted in minor grumbles from the hard disk and then nothing. No error messages, no noises, no progress dialogue (it’s set for that), zilch, nothing. Downloading software updates, pictures, and Acrobat reader files into the RAM work fine but can’t be filed on disk.

4. It’s not “aâ€

Just wanted to add, for the record:
I have both Netscape 7.0 and Netscape 7.2 on Mac OSX , in separate Application folders.

I viewed my Netscape 7.2 program's "Package Contents" (using a ctrl-click on the netscape.app) and the compreg.dat file is located in the Contents > MacOS > Components folder. I then viewed my Netscape 7.0 program's Package Contents, and no such file exists.

Netscape 7.0x is based on Mozilla 1.0.x and, from what I could find in Mozilla's documentation, the compreg.dat file didn't exist until Mozilla version 1.2 ... So, the compreg.dat file didn't exist in Netscape until Netscape 7.1, which is based on Mozilla 1.4. (Whether removing the "component manifest" equivalent file(s) in Netscape 7.0x would help or not, I don't know, but a removal and then reinstall of the Netscape 7.0 program should have worked just as well.)
