Netscape 8 beta - Feb. 17

Postby Joji » Tue 01 Feb, 2005 2:35 am

FYI,
from MozillaZine article

And from CNET.
On Feb. 17, Netscape is expected to release both the second test, or "beta," version of Netscape 8 and a redesigned Netscape.com portal site.
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; ja-JP; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041108 Firefox/1.0
It is spelled J-O-J-I, but pronounced GEORGE.

For the first time, Netscape is referring to its forthcoming browser revision as Netscape 8.

I'm glad to hear that; "Netscape 8" makes logical sense as a name seeing that the last Netscape-branded browser release was Netscape 7.2, and is a simpler name than "Netscape Browser prototype." I still hope they'll change the useragent string to include the word "Netscape" at the end.

Could this be the first version of the upcoming Netscape to be released to the general public, and not just a limited pool of testers?

And here's hoping they continue Netscape's cross platform traditions, and make it
available for users of Mac OS X and Linux/Unix, as well as for the Windows users.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

Silicon.com published a quite covering article entitled Netscape 8 adds anti-phishing features too:

There isn't going to be any linux or macosx version. I know there isn't, it isn't tested, and there wasn't any prototype for it. So I now quit at netscape, and will not use it until and if they develop a linux version.

I happen to believe that aol/netscape is only in on this for the money.

Am, what about me, who made the mistake of signing up with my AOL username? I gain a @netscape.net account, which disappeared when I quit AOL, so I am banned from the newsgroups there ( I already sent requests twice).

I just hope that Netscape 8 will not use the aluminum skin.

Will it be a suite like previous Netscape versions (my preference), or browser-only?

I think Browser only. They might create Netscape Mail 1.0

There was an early post which said that it would be done, after completion of the Browser.

why else would they spend millions of dollars on it? companies want profit, they aren't obviously just making netscape for the fun...

They should release versions of Netscape 8 (as a suite) for both Linux and MacOS.

Of course, they should, but since the project is farmed out by AOL, there is no telling what will happen. I don't know, nor care to know why AOL is doing this, but I am waiting, totally uninterested. Firefox is perfectly good for me.
