Hello Wise Ones,

I thoroughly enjoy your site - it is a wealth of information and one I depend on to keep my browser going. I use Netscape 7.2 and Windows XP Home but only yesterday, I tried to delete several subfolders from my inbox and it wouldn't take. The highlight would return to the Inbox folder. I also couldn't transfer any messages to any of these folders.

What to do?

Joe,

Close Netscape and Quick Launch, open Windows Explorer and navigate to your Mail Account folder.

Open the Mail Account folder and delete the files with an MSF extension, e.g., Inbox.msf, Drafts.msf, etc. DO NOT DELETE the files WITHOUT the MSF extension, as they contain your Mail.

Post back if you continue to have problems.

Your files would be located here:

[tt]C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\Mail[/tt]

NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
To see hidden files:
1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
2. Click the View tab
3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
4. Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files."
5. Click OK.

The problem has raised its ugly head again. I deleted all the msf files and a search for *.msf reveals none. What can I do??

Nevermind, I went into the files and found the specified folder. I deleted it and it is nomore in Netscape. Glad to have it gone.

Joe,

I was just about to post the below, and I would still move the subfolders out of the Inbox, if they are large files.


Exit Netscape 7.2
Back up your Profiles folder

Next:
Delete the entire Cache folder
Delete the XUL.mfl file
Netscape will build these files and folders on Startup

Open your Inbox.sbd folder
You should see your subfolders listed there with the name of the folder, and it's .MSF file, e.g., Family, and Family.msf

Copy the file with NO MSF extension to your Mail Account folder in the left panel of Windows Explorer
Delete the MSF file

Do this for each subfolder
When you open Netscape Mail, you will see the subfolders listed under your Mail Account name, rather than the Inbox.

The Inbox is not intended for archiving, and if you have very large Mail files, this might, stress might, be your problem. At any rate, I would stop using subfolders for the Inbox, and instead make your subfolders under the Mail Account.

To add one more detail, I would suggest that you move to Firefox and Thunderbird, or Mozilla 1.7.8, or else wait until the new Versions of all three, which should be out this week or next.

Netscape 7.2 is not as stable as the above browsers, not to mention the security vulnerabilities and bugs. I would give it some serious thought....

Good idea (as usual). I wish the new Netscape 8.0 had an email program. A "Gal Pal" is also having some trouble with Netscape 7.2. I'll pass your suggestion on to her.

I agree with ramona about the vulnerabilities, which may or may be troublesome (other than to the mind), but I found NS7.2 mail to be as stable as any of the Mozillas, or Thunderbird, for that matter.
Unfortunately, many users are doing things which make sense (most of the time), but should not not be done, with such programs.
I am getting more and more disanchanted with their performance, often due to obscure or non-existing directions.
The way AOL has been handling NS, I am delighted that it does not have mail. for now there is only Thunderbird, and the new 1.1 will be dynamite.
For a day or two, of course, until vulnerabilities are unearthed.
