Adobe to buy Macromedia for US$3.4 billion

Graphic design software maker Adobe Systems best known for its flagship product, Photoshop, has agreed to buy Macromedia best known for Flash developer.

Under the terms of the merger, which has already been approved by both boards, San Jose, California-based Adobe Systems will pay 0.69 of its own shares for each Macromedia share. After the deal, Macromedia’s stockholders will own approximately 18% of the combined company on a pro forma basis.

Netscape was acquired by AOL for US$4.3 Billion in 1998. (The acquisition completed in May 1999)

This makes me wonder what will come of conflicting apps like Photoshop and Fireworks, GoLive and Dreamweaver, etc... Will they continue putting out both products, or would they just merge both programs? What really makes me wonder, though, is if I'll be able to buy a copy of Flash MX Elements for $100 someday.

Another question -- how about standards? Adobe and Dreamweaver have always had different standards (take a look at PDF). Would they just make the standards interchangeable among the programs, or would they merge them into one standard that would be compatible with both?
