Postby Pu7o » Fri 01 Apr, 2005 9:13 pm

i have finally managed to get the exact amount of cash needed to buy a mac mini. however i have serious questions about if i should get it.
is the mac mini really worth the $499 when i have a *very* good pc?

Of course, $499 includes a licensed copy of latest Mac OS X, and iLife'05. And you will be running on a real Mac.

I'd suggest you add something on top of that base Mac system, such as additional RAM and AirPort Extreme wireless network card.

Wait until Tiger comes out, don't want to be stuck with Panther

i don't need wireless LAN, as i use regular LAN here at home, however there's another thing: do i have to buy a usb keyboard to use the mac mini?

Well, as for wireless networking, you will love it once you have it. But it costs more.

Any standard USB keyboard and mouse would work for Mac mini. You don't need to get the Apple one. However, it is recommended that you use Apple keyboard and mouse, for standard Apple keys such as :cmd: and option. And the single button mouse, be a real Mac user.

i'm saying this because i *don't* have a usb keyboard, only mouse. and i couldn't live with a single-button mouse (i can't even live with a two-button mouse, i got too used to the mousewheel).

Also, i hope the mac mini isn't as slow as pearpc, the ppc emulator which i am currently using...

so i guess i'll have to buy a usb keyboard along with the mac mini. well, i guess having a mac will be worth it... now i just have to wait until i can actually buy it, since it's sold out here at fnac.

Pedro,

Congratulations on your new Mac mini. Just wonder, did you buy Apple keyboard and mouse? Any upgrades to your Mac mini? such as Airport Extreme, bluetooth, RAM, HDD, or superdrive?

Remember that you can request a free upgrade to Tiger for yourself with Tiger Up-To-Date Program if you buy your Mac mini after 12th April.

Thanks :)

No, i did not buy any of the upgrades, as i spent nearly all my money on the Mac mini itself. The rest went to a USB keyboard. No, I did not get the apple keyboard and mouse (i can't even imagine myself using a single-button mouse!), but it seems that the "windows key" works as the apple key when using a regular keyboard. :)

About the free upgrade to Tiger, I'll give it a look :)

EDIT: The free upgrade seems to be for american and canadian citizens only. I live in Portugal, and therefore am unqualified for this upgrade :(

You should check the Apple Portugal site (if there's one), OR call your local Apple reseller about the Up-To-Date program.
