(please use this thread for Modern Modoki 1.x support)

Hi,
A Japanese Netscape user, whose handle name is lowandsh, made a Modern-like theme for N8beta; "Modern Modoki".
I had helped him making installer and English page.

I think this theme is worth telling to English audience, but he says he is not so good at English. So I'm posting this on behalf of him.

If you have questions and comments around this theme, please feel free to post here. I'll pass your comments to lowandsh.

Thank you Antony for letting us use this topic as a support forum. Smile

EDIT (by Admin)
This new Modern Modoki ver 1.10 is compatible for Netscape 8 (final).

Subject changed from "Netscape 8 Beta Theme - Modern Modoki" - Antony 23 May 2005

I installed the theme last night, it looks very clean. And I really like this theme, as it does not steal too much attention, just plain simple, and good looking.

I also installed "Modern Modoki" and it's quite nice. It's a subdued theme with muted colors that doesn't demand attention, like Antony says. It fits in well with SillyDog's current 'color scheme', too Smile

Thank you Antony and Alice for positive comments.
Glad to hear you liked Modern Modoki.

It seems there are some reports also on the Netscape Browser Review forum.

I'll encourage lowandsh to update theme when the final is out. Smile

Thank you Antony.
I can't fully understand Chinese, but many Kanji characters are same between Traditional Chinese and Japanese. Very interesting to me.

BTW, Modern Modoki is now version 1.02.
You can make personal tool bar narrower via Customize window.
Just select "Personal toolbar" on "Toolbars:" box, and checkmark "Use Small Icons".

I reckon this theme would look good if it was also available For Firefox as well as Netscape 8.0b.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

on Firefox you can use the GrayModern theme, which is a near-perfect clone of the Mozilla/NS6.1+/NS7 Modern theme

The GreyModern has an icon problem. The icon in the tool bar for the history and the bookmarks is the same. Sad

Many more people use Mozilla Firefox than "Netscape" 8.0 beta.

I've been idling on these boards for quite some time, but finally registered to give thanks to the author of this theme. For the first time today I've actually started seriously tinkering with it now that it's not so painful on the eyes. For whatever reason, I have an easier time converting people to a "Netscape" browser than I do Firefox, just for the namesake. It somehow still mananges to have the mythical "Oh-yeah... Netscape" air about it. After getting most of my extensions in place, the only (minor) thing I'm missing is manually setting the min and max tab width. Any tab-related extensions have a way of killing the browser. Anyhoot, thanks for a lovely theme.

Hi, burnerO.
I translated your message into Japanese, and sent it to lowandsh. He was very pleased to hear that you liked the theme.

Lowandsh and I had discussed this issue, but it seems difficult to achieve by theme. We tried using userChrome.css settings, but somehow max-width and min-width settings are not working as expected. Anyway, have a try adding below on your userChrome.css.

Code:
tabbrowser tab[selected="true"] {
     min-width: 120px !important;
}

This should keep active tab width wider than default, when opening many tabs. Adjust pixel numbers according to your needs.

Hope this helps.

P.S. In case you are using version 1.02, Modern Modoki is now version 1.03.

Tell him thank you once again for me then, because the latest changes are also welcomed. Each day that I use the skin, I notice a level of attention to detail that is appreciated, and the choices he makes in design are all very tasteful.

Without disrespecting what's been done, do you think there's any chance he would attempt a port of the popular theme "Qute" by Arvid Axelsson? It is by far my favorite Firefox theme, and wouldn't require too many changes from what's already been done with the Modern skin. The blue scheme would need restoring to a system one along with the scrollbars, and the graphics swapped out. If I was a little more competent in skinning, I might attempt it myself. Either way, tell him thank you for his consideration.

IMO, porting a theme to another product is primarily a right of the original author of the theme. So it depends on Arvid Axelsson's will, I guess.
