A Look Back at the Browser Wars

Postby Andrew T. » Thu 05 May, 2005 10:57 pm

I recently decided to write an essay titled "A Look Back at the Browser Wars." Essentially, it concisely chronicles Netscape's rise to prominence, the advent of Internet Explorer, the impact of subsequent versions of both products on the marketplace, how Netscape ultimately reinvented itself through the advent of AOL acquisition and the Mozilla project, and other matters right up through the present day. Feel free to tell me what you think, and I hope you find it an enjoyable read!

A very nice writing.

Okay, I have to admit I read it very quick. I will read it again tonight.

Two points: first, you did not link to http://sillydog.org/netscape/kb/netscapemozilla.html

second point, the essay is a bit biased (I could be wrong), I could not find any merits of MSIE during skimming.

I enjoyed the essay, but I would have liked some LINKS in the article, as well as some references for further reading, such as Antony provided in his Netscape-Mozilla article.

I also would have liked to see some mention of the Sun Microsystems antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft ("Java war") which finally ended with Microsoft ceasing distribution of its MS Java Virtual Machine.

Good work, Andrew. I also enjoyed reading through your essay. I realize you decided to confine your remarks to Netscape and Internet Explorer, but it seems to me that Opera is now very much a part of the so-called "renewed browser wars" and I wonder at your silence in that direction. Also, why did you decide not to mention the advent of Netscape 8? Just curious. Otherwise, a very interesting read. :)
