2 IP's?

Postby Ron Williams » Tue 17 May, 2005 10:56 pm

I have recently gotten verizon DSL after i moved. my computer has two IP's. one that the computer sees and one that webservers see. I was wondering why this is happening. I do not have a router, switch, hub, etc. It is a direct connection between the modem and the computer via ethernet port.

One is the IP assigned to you by your ISP, the other one is internal IP address, you will have an internal IP address even if you only have one computer.

why would I have an internal IP? I had comcast (cable internet) and there was 1 IP, both the sites that show IP address' and the command prompt's ipconfig were the same.

Well,
I found out that my modem is not only a modem but also a router. Thus the reason I had 2 IP address'. I called verizon regarding turning off this modem feature and they suggested going to there website and searching for it. I replied with "I called to have you figure out my problem, not for you to say look on your website, If I wanted to look on your website I would have during the long hold time and the numerous times your hold service says check us out on the web". Needless to say they were not happy to hear that, my solution to them was "why dont I take it to your customer service location and exchange it for a standard modem, unlike my managed modem/router you supplied me with. Sorry about the ranting, but that why I have the second IP.
