.plist file missing

Postby stelios » Mon 16 May, 2005 4:53 pm

My browser, Netscape 7.02, was acting up so I decided to clear its cache and cookies and trash its preferences (.plist) file. To my surprise a new .plist file was NOT created. So now I'm using Netscape and there is no .plist file to be found anywhere on my HD --actually the original preferences file is still in the Trash. How can this be? What am I missing?

BTW, I have an eMac running 10.2.

Thank you.

The .plist file is not Netscape's. I know very little Mac, but all programs (more orless) use that file.
If you can take that file out of the Trash, before it is too late. And, you should be able to edit the Netscape preferences, without going outside the program, but I am not a Mac user.

Hello Stelios,

If the [tt].plist[/tt] is found in your Trash, it means that file might be moved to Trash (by mistake?).

You can try to restart your Mac (so that [tt].plist[/tt] in the Trash will stop associating with Netscape), and launch Netscape again.

If all fail, you can try move that [tt].plist[/tt] back.

BTW, does Netscape ask for [tt].plist[/tt] file when launching?

Antony, thank you for replying.

Actually I was the one to put the .plist file in the trash so that the next time I would launch Netscape a new .plist would be created.

It sounds a bit strange that there is communication between Netscape and its thrown-in-the-trash preferences.

And, no , Netscape does not ask for its .plist file when launched.

Well, that's the file association in Mac. Different to Windows.
You will need to log-off and log-in again (or reboot), unless you move that [tt].plist[/tt] to Trash before that file being associated with Netscape.

Hope this helps.

Just to clarify, and repeating what Fulvio said, the .plist file is NOT a Netscape (or Mozilla) file.

According to http://filext.com/
Extension: PLIST
Program and/or Extension Function: Property List XML File
Specific Notes:
A PLIST file is an XML file using Apple’s plist DTD. PLIST stands for Property List, and refers to the fact that PLIST files typically hold lists of properties. PLIST files are a standard part of Apple's OS X Core Foundation. You can edit plist files using a text editor or Apple’s PropertyListEditor, found on the Developer CD or on Apple’s web site.

Here is the full name of the file I put in the Trash: com.netscape.mozilla.plist
If this is not a Netscape/Mozilla preferences file, then where is it?

Just to add more information regarding [tt].plist[/tt] file.
Pref Setter is a good freeware for viewing/editing preference ([tt].plist[/tt]) files.

I believe it should be part of Netscape/Mozilla

It's weird, I can't find [tt]com.netscape.mozilla.plist[/tt] on my Mac.
I enabled all areas for searching on my Spotlight.

Which version of Netscape and which version of Mac OS X are you running?

Antony is helping you with the missing .plist file (from what I can tell, it appears to be a file created by Mac OSX). In case it's helpful, here's a list of "user" files created by Mozilla/Netscape7.xx :
http://gemal.dk/mozilla/files.html

If Netscape 7.02 was "acting up" as you said, the usual remedies include clearing the cache, history, and cookies, and deleting the profile's "XUL.mfl"- "XUL FastLoad File" or "XUL.mfasl" file (name depends on OS... see bug 110096) and, if all else fails, creating a new Netscape 7.xx profile. More troubleshooting tips here:
http://mozilla.gunnars.net/mozfaq_use.h ... ting_guide

Profile locations for Netscape 7.xx & Mozilla, from http://users.adelphia.net/~irwingreenwa ... files.html
Mac OS X:
MacHD/Users/[name]/Library/Mozilla/Profiles/[name]/xxxxxxxx.slt

You can try creating a a new profile using the Netscape 7.02 profile manager. On my husband's Ibook running Netscape 7.0 on OS X 10.1.5 there was a link to the Netscape Profile Manager in the same Application folder as the Netscape app. If you don't have that, then hold down the OPTION key and keep it held down while double-clicking the Netscape icon, until the Profile Manager starts.

Your Netscape 7.02 version is quite old and outdated, by the way. Netscape 7.2 is the more recent version.

Just found the [tt]com.netscape.mozilla.plist[/tt] file from my PowerBook 12". I still can't see the file on my PowerMac, perhaps, I haven't used Netscape 7.2 on my PowerMac that often as on my PowerBook (and hence the [tt]com.netscape.mozilla.plist[/tt] was created)

The default location of [tt]com.netscape.mozilla.plist[/tt] is
[tt]~/Library/[/tt]
(with an alias (short cut) from [tt]~/Library/Preferences/[/tt])

Where [tt]~[/tt] denotes user's home directory e.g. [tt]/Users/username/[/tt]
