Firefox 1.1 Alpha Preview (Deer Park Alpha 1)

Postby Antony » Tue 24 May, 2005 1:15 am

From MozillaZine: Firefox 1.1 Preview Alpha is now available for testing, known as Deer Park Alpha 1 release candidate.

In the tradition of Mozilla renamings, Deer Park Alpha 1 has previously been referred to in planning documents as the Deer Park Developer Preview, the Firefox 1.1 Developer Preview and Firefox 1.1 Alpha. Note that while this release is termed as an alpha, it's actually based on the Mozilla 1.8 Beta 2 code. The final Firefox 1.1 release will be based on the final 1.8 code.

Well, Deer Park Alpha 1 crashed when I clicked "Firefox" menu. This was within the first minute I use Deer Park Alpha.

TalkBack was launched automatically, but I did not use it.

New features of Deer Park Alpha 1 including:
* "Sanitize" privacy feature
The "Sanitize" feature provides an easy way to quickly remove browsing history, cookies, cache, saved form information, and other personal data. The items to be removed can be customized, and the feature can be activated using either a keyboard shortcut or through a menu item.
* Fast back (and forward)
This very experimental feature allows much faster session history navigation. The feature is off by default but can be enabled for testing purposes by setting the browser.sessionhistory.max_viewers preference to a nonzero number.
* Drag and drop (Mac OS X)
Users can now drag more file types to the Dock icon to open in the browser
* Keyboard shortcuts (Mac OS X)
:cmd: + Return and :cmd: + Shift + Return are now supported for address completion as on other platforms.

...
(For a complete list, please see New Browser Features in Deer Park Alpha 1.)

There are also new features for web developers and extension developers.

Downloaded and installed without any problems.
Preferences Toolbar & Weatherfox were added automatically, because I installed it over Firefox 1.0.4.
Sanitize function is working fine, also Saferfox theme.

Pleased with it so far :)

It should be noted that the "Deer Park" branded releases of Firefox are for testing purposes only.
It is intended for developers, not end users, Anyone who downloads and installs these Firefox
builds with no intention of searching out and reporting bugs, shouldn't really be using it.

Deer Park is the codename for Mozilla Firefox 1.1 and Deer Park Alpha 1
is a preview of 1.1 aimed at developers. The builds available today
are Deer Park Alpha 1 release candidates.

Deer Park Alpha 1 intentionally uses a codename rather
than the Mozilla Firefox branding to dissuade end-users
from downloading the preview . . .

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

so what is "Sanitize"?

Let's take a look of our beloved Safari, one of the new feature in Safari 2.0, Private Browsing (screenshot from http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/safari/ )

It is good to know that Firefox is picking up good features from Safari.

After a few more tests, I have a comment:
Deer Park Alpha 1 is very unstable.

Antony,
what causes you to say that? I am using a nightly, which is labelled Deer Park Alpha 1, also, and it has been as solid as earlier nightlies, which had, also, the 1.8b2 engine, and it has been as steady as any other Firefox builds. Are the unzipped builds that different from an install build?
By the way, I used the same profile as I did before for this new set of build, and also three extentions: Foxytunes, User Agent Switcher 0.6.3 and Launchy. I use only Foxytunes. I don't have any extra theme.
By the way, there is a Winamp5.91.

Antony,
what causes you to say that?
because it crashed 6 times in total.

This may be another one of those things, which depend on who knows what.
And, interestingly, I quit testing the Mozilla1.8b2 suite, and earlier builds because of such instability.
Thanks, fp

Well, Deer Park Alpha 1 is the first developer test build, so I don't expect it to be stable.

I would strongely reccomend not trying any of the regular extensions in the Deerpark alpha. Most of the extensions developers are not aware of the many chanes, and it can/will make fx unstable. Try just using deepark without any extensions and see if it crashes or worksbetter. I happen to use latest CVS everynight on linux and its never really crashed for me on linux(except when mozplugger messes up). Oh yeh, and also i use latest CVS for normal browsing but thats just becfuase i'm a mozgeek.

DP Alpha 1 has a little problem with connections or something....
I am receiving the "The Document contains no data !" almost every minute or two.
I haven`t been exposed to this problem since Firefox 0.8.
How about You ?
