Using KDE on Mac with Fink commander??

Postby TK19 » Fri 27 May, 2005 1:56 pm

Very early in "the desktop thread" It was metioned by DJGM that it was possible to use KDE on mac, with Fink. I would like to figure out how to do this......PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

Basically . . .

 Install Fink and Fink Commander.
 Run the Fink Commander app.
 Type [tt]KDE[/tt] in the search box.
 Select [tt]bundle-kde[/tt] to install.
 Wait ages while it downloads.
 Wait some more for it to install.
 Enjoy running KDE3 on your Mac!

Bear in mind . . . you're most probably likely to get what is now a somewhat outdated version
of KDE (such as v3.1.4) using the default setup of Fink. To grab a later version, you'll need to
set Fink to check for what are effectively classed as "unstable" packages. Even though they
may not actually be unstable (or liable to crash often) and even though KDE 3.4 is officially
classed as stable for most other UNIX/Linux based OSes, for some reason, the more upto
date packages such as KDE 3.2+ are classed as "unstable" in the Fink environment.

To set Fink to look for "unstable" packages would require me to type out a longwinded,
and perhaps rather technical explanation. Eitherway, you should be able to find most
(if not all) the info you need about the relevant Fink configuration settings, in the
documentation included with your installation of Fink and Fink Commander.

There's also a Mac OS X Native version of KDE (not using X11) available at http://kde.opendarwin.org

Hmmm, interesting . . . BUT, it's pre-alpha, and therefore it's quite likely to be unstable.

EDIT - Additional stuff added later . . .
They may not work. They may not even install. They may make your monitor explode in
a shower of glass. EVEN LCDs, WHICH DON'T CONTAIN ANY GLASS! (ed. I've now been
told LCDs are not plastic, but do, in fact contain glass, but the point remains!)

They may make your children grow horns, and cause the people in your neighbor-
hood to explode spontaneously while doing the Macarena. They will rip out your
eyeballs, andeat your soul with a really dull spoon, laughing and cackling while
forcing Cheerios up your nose. They will make your intestines explode
in a rain of confetti, while evil clowns bite your feet.

Hmmm, maybe that taking things a little bit too far . . . !

You very likely will need to run "killall kdeinit" and/or "killall dcopserver"
and/or "killall kded" when you're done running any KDE apps.
Currently it doesn't clean up after itself properly.

You know I said "quite likely to be unstable" earlier. Scratch that. Judging by the quoted text
above, "KDE/Qt/Mac Native" could well be very unstable, and is very likely to be very crashy!

well it's not suitable for running the desktop environment itself, but the kde programs themselves run fine. I used Konqueror as my main browser for a while, KOffice is still my primary office suite, and Konversation is my primary IRC client :)

i'm posting this from Konqueror (Mac OS X Native). After going to the KDE control center and setting it to use white colors and Aqua style controls, it looks just like any other mac application!

the native version only has the KDE programs, not the KDE environment. If you want stuff like the KDE taskbar and desktop, you're looking in the wrong place.

Hmmmmm..... it doesnt have the taskbar. I guess to get the taskbar I will have to install the non-mac version.

installation is incredibly slow during the "Optimizing" phase. But the programs will work well afterwards!
