wow,, doing what that guy said, saved me tons of work reinstalling xp. usually when i have these problems, i can count on dell suport. but i just got a new xps notebook, and wiped it completely and and used the xp reinstallation disk instead of the vista one that came with it. and doing all that again would have sucked, thank you so freaking much

Okay. Had same problem as everyone else and deleting upper or lower keys in regedit works great but then I get an error message with ITUNES that I need to reinstall ITUNES because it does not recognize my cd rom. Anyone having this issue come up with a permanent fix? I do not want to reinstall ITUNES yet again to just have to redelete the upper or lower keys.

Erdiko's registry fix saved me time and money also. I had Code 39 missing or corrupt DVD driver, had worked on it a few hours. My Acronis disc image back up failed so I couldn't restore any driver files from my system backup. Tommorow I was going to Best Buy and getting an external DVD drive to reformat windows XP. I have been having some issues with this 3 year old laptop and still might eventually reformat but now I won't need an external drive to do it. Does anyone know how to get into the Recovery Console on a Toshiba M45-s331? I'd like to run Ckdisc. I tried the Microsoft solution. Sorry to get off track.

I'm having the same problem, but when I type Regedit in the run box, an error message appears saying 'Regedit is not a valid Win32 opperation' or something to that affect, now when I type it, nothing happens except the decline in speed of the computer...

Some dude at Dell told me today i was going to have to backup all my data, remove Windows Vista, and reinstall it. I said "no way !!!!". There as got to be a better way. May I say you are king of CD-rom-and-Dvd-Rom-corrupt-driver-fixes-that-deal-with-registry-issues man !! Many thanks!!!

I have removed the upper and lower filters, uninstalled the drive, rebootede removed all burning programs, my drive is still not showing up.
when it tries to re install the drive it gives the same code 39 error.

Can anyone help? Please!

For those of you who still can't see your dvd drive after erdiko's post and what microsoft says there is a further more advanced solution.

Follow what this 2 posts say. It is alot more complicated but worked great.

To fix this problem, I performed the following:
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

A mild clarification for the above instructions which worked FANTASTICALLY !!! (thx Erdico !!...I was lucky and did't have to search much to find this...a friend sent it to me.)

after running regedit you will keep clicking on the folders shown in the path above until you get to the two files "UpperFilters.bak" and "LowerFilters.bak" . Then you will right click over each one and click on Delete. then quit and restart the computer. Amazing how it fixed the problem so easily...thx again, I was almost going to go out to buy a USB DVD drive !

I know this post is to an old thread, but I lost my DVD and CD drives after installing XP SP-3 and the regedit fix took care of the problem.

I also lost my optical drivers when I downloaded iTunes. It caused a bunch of other problems with my XP, most of which I was able to solve, but I couldn't get my drivers back until I discovered this forum. iTunes has lost me for good. Erdiko, if you're still around, how did you know how to do that?
