I just ran into this problem after bringing an older XP computer up to date with the latest Windows updates. After the final post-update reboot, my optical drives had the Code 39 problem.

The PC had Easy CD Creator 5.x installed, one of the known programs that "corrupts" things but I uninstalled that as soon as I found out it was bad for CD burners. I did the registry deletes as stated in the Microsoft knowledge article and I have my drives back, but the CD burner is no longer recognized as a device that can write! I reinstalled Sonic RecordNow but it says "No Recorder", meaning it can't find a device on the system that can burn optical media.

So what can I do to re-enable my CD-RW drive to be a writing device? And why is Microsoft remaining blind to the fact that their "fix" disables burners from burning when so many other people are having this problem?! :x

Thanks,
joeyfan

Erdiko's process works

Postby Dankbar » Fri 26 Oct, 2007 10:59 pm

Just finished using Erdiko's Windows Registry edit method, and it worked brilliantly. I was a little worried about the implications of using the Registry, given the potential for erasing important data from your operating system, but this worked without any problems at all.
I even retained the usage of keeping my recording capabilities for the drive, but I noticed that others have not been successful in terms of this. Still, thanks a lot, you saved me hours more of troubleshooting! :D

Erdiko's method

Postby abcd1234 » Wed 31 Oct, 2007 10:45 pm

Thanks Erdiko.
I don no know if any body else has post i, but one can using device manager remove the CD, make the registry modification then let windows using device manager again search for the CD with no need for rebooting.

I was so fed up with seeing this problem that I created an application to automate it.

You can select which filters to remove, and different device types too.

It solves the problem of removing all filters thus preventing burning software failures.

Download FilterFix.exe here

I had the Code 39 error randomly one day..and deleted the upper and lower filters, as noted in this thread, and this helped with some of the problem.

My cd drive now recognizes only video game discs and software cds, but when I put any music cd (a burned disc or not) or any disc with picture images on it, my computer just reads them as blank. Does anyone know how I get my computer to read CD-R and CD-RW discs?

Or would buying a new disc drive solve the problem?

cd drive not reading content after regedit fix

Postby kenpcman » Wed 12 Dec, 2007 5:27 pm

You may need to reinstall your cd burning software to correct this

Thanks...but do you mind if I ask how to do this? I have had this computer for 4 years and haven't really done this before. I have all the original CD's? Should it be on one of those or should I have to download cd burning software for my specific drive online?

EDIT: I just put some of the original sofware CD's I got with the computer, but it won't read any of them. How am I supposed to reinstall the burning software now?

cd software

Postby kenpcman » Fri 14 Dec, 2007 11:22 am

when i got cd roms working they would not read things i had backed up but when i uninstalled and reinstalled the software everything worked for me

You might have Nero or Easy cd creator or Rioxo .

It might be a manufactured disk .Dell ,tiny,Packard bell did them so it all depends what make of pc you have.

Look through the cd's you have and see if you can find one that has something to do with cd/dvd

I have some discs but my computer won't read them. It only really seems to read video game discs.

cd not reading

Postby kenpcman » Mon 17 Dec, 2007 3:31 am

Have you tried the cd's on a friends pc ?

Are they original are backup copy's that don't work ?

Try downloading a trial version of Nero and see if it picks your drive up

http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nero8-trial.php

It mhas all the software in it to read backup cd aswell

If it works you can get Nero 6 at

Thanks from the bottom of my heart for the program. It works a treat :D.

Much better than editing the reg.
Prehaps you could show apple how to make iTunes work!!

I gave up on my iPod and iTunes with it.

1: iTunes is a great program, if your running a Mac, but on a PC (or at least mine) ti runs too slow and hogs too many resources.

2:I couldn't get my iPod to work. So, I went out and bought a PSP instead.

Great It works with Vista too

Postby rajasp » Sun 13 Jan, 2008 10:06 am

Thanks erdiko,

I applied the same solution for my Compaq Presario V6000 With Windows Vista.
After reinstalling OS for this problem and rebooting it after few program installations created this problem again. The device driver for CD DVD driver was missing or corrupted.
In Device Manager console there was a warning icon (yellow exclaimation mark in triangle)
and cds and dvd's were not being detected. When I said properties, the error said that the device driver is missing or coruptted. After a lot of struggle I came across this posting. I just gave it a shot it WORKED!

Registered to this site to thank you and giving more specification of my problem for people seeking the solution for this!
Thanks again!
