Problem with CD ROM drives Error 39

Postby starman » Sun 26 Oct, 2008 11:12 pm

I was so afraid I'd have to re-install windows after spending days trying to solve the problem of losing my CD-Rom drives to the dreaded error 39. Erdiko's regedit fix took two minutes to do and I was up and running again. Thanks

Crazy, I've wasted so much time trying to fix the stupid drivers for these non-functioning cd-rom drives (I was getting error 32 repeatedly). And this fixed it in no time! And I have to mirror sactovic - how did you do that Erdiko? ?

Erdiko Rocks!!!

Postby CyberCurt » Sat 08 Nov, 2008 2:12 pm

I have recently seen this for only the second time, first time ended with a reinstall which seemed like a lot for what seemed to be a simple problem.

This saved a lot of hassle this time - Suspect the original owner got a virus or it was caused by Sonic or Roxio software?? Bought it as-is for $20 with monitor Dell Dimension 2350 1.9GHz 256M RAM 60G HD - I'm planning on using it as a digital music box!

CD Rom Registry Fix

Postby Barry » Tue 11 Nov, 2008 6:28 pm

I came across erdiko's posting of July 2nd, 2005 regarding the registry fix to get a CD-Rom working again. I had the same issue as the original person who posted the his/her problem, however, I was advised by my computer manufacturer's 'technical expert' that I'd have to reinstall my operating system (seems to be the common fix for these guys). I tried erdiko's recommendation, and 'BINGO' the CD-Rom drive was recognized after rebooting and works just fine now. Saved a lot of work. A big thanks to erdiko. :)

SM Bus Controller ...
1. On my XP Pro machine the first Registry hit is:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E97D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0042]

2. Definition

3. Do a Google search for [ "sm bus controller" ], and read some of the hits for clues as to possible driver availabilities. One link is here.

If no Optical Drives appear in Device Manager, this is probably not the fix you are looking for *hand wave*.

First thing to do for you is to see if the drives show up in the bios.

Erdiko your amazing! Another success story!
I just reinstalled windows and encountered this problem. I'm really glad I did not have to reinstall again! :D
I did not know that this was a problem that happens to a lot of people.
Microsoft should do something about it! (But they probably won't )
Well anyways thanks for your help.
I will sure visit this site in the future and recommend it to others.

Error Code 39

Postby lenegirl » Wed 24 Dec, 2008 11:13 pm

I have the same problem. I went into the registry (like many others) I found the key Enriko talked about but under it was 5 folders with just zeros as thrie title. I didn't find anything referring to upper & lower bat files & whatever else. Any idea?

I'm helping my nephew who needs this fixed before he goes back to college (or I hope to have it fixed)

Try booting into safe mode then delete the stings.
You can do this by holding F8 as your computer boots into windows.

RE: I was doing it backwards....

Postby thedeerhunter » Fri 26 Dec, 2008 10:09 pm

Yes, I did try it in safe mode. The problem was I was trying to erase the hkey numerical value instead of the words Uppercase and lowercase, which just worked. Yes, it is like magic, I am anything but savy, but I understand a lot, But I do not understand how two seemingly unrelated words could do so much damage and corruption. Does anyone know What they are in simple terms? Anyway...another success story...thanks JP
