Error installing Mozilla. Possible GRE error?

Postby beanboy89 » Thu 23 Jun, 2005 5:25 pm

Eariler today, I uninstalled Mozilla 1.7.8, as I wanted to be prepaired if there would be a Mozilla 1.7.9 release. The uninstall was uneventful. Well, I decided later that I did want 1.7.8 installed again. I ran the setup for Mozilla, and at the GRE installation session, I got an error message with the text "Cannot create temp directory." I clicked the only option, "OK." After that, Mozilla setup continued as normal. I went to run mozilla.exe, and it didn't start. No splashscreen was seen. I also tried to install Netscape 7.2, same sequence of events, netscp.exe didn't start. I went to my GRE folder, it was empty. This only seems to be a problem with the installer builds, as I can run my Mozilla 1.7.8 and 1.8b2 zipped builds without prbolem.

Is there any way that I can resolve the installer issue I've had?

Added: After the failed Mozilla and Netscape installations, I checked in add/remove programs, and I saw enrties for both Mozilla and Netscape. I choose in uninstall both. After the uninstall a Windows Explorer window was brought up to the "C:\WINDOWS\" directory.

Billy,

You need to clear your C:\WINDOWS\Temp directory. The error means there is not enough room in the Temp directory to install the applications, as Mozilla and Netscape place numerous install files there.

If you run XP the Temp directory is located in:
[tt]C:\Documents and Settings\profilename\Local Settings\Temp [/tt]

(edited Temp directory location)

Thanks Ramona. I've got Mozilla reinstalled, and it looks like everything works. The Temp folder had 1GB of files in it. I can imagine why it wouldn't let Mozilla install. But now is it safe to empty the Recycle Bin so all the files get deleted for good?

Billy,

Yes, it's perfectly safe to delete those files. I clean out my Temp folder every day, deleting everything it contains...

On my WinXP system, the Temp directory is here:
[tt]C:\Documents and Settings\Alice\Local Settings\Temp[/tt]

You can go to Start > Run > Type: %TEMP% and click OK
to open the TEMP folder in WinXP.

Both beanboy and Ramona were using Win98, but it is good to know about the location of the files in WinXP.

On Window 2000 and XP, the temporary folder is
[tt]C:\Documents and Settings\WindowsUserProfile\Local Settings\Temp\[/tt]

However, [tt]C:\Windows\temp\[/tt] exists and is still being used (by a few applications).

Yes, I know that beanboy and Ramona were both using Win98. I just wanted to clear up the incorrect information that was posted, for the benefit of any WinXP users (like you) who may read this thread. I also wanted to mention the Start > Run > %TEMP% trick to open the Temp folder.
