Accidentally deleted my mail account! Can I get it back?????

Postby topgun21 » Wed 22 Jun, 2005 9:53 am

I'm using Netscape 7.2 on a PC. I accidentally deleted my mail account with all the sub folders and stuff. I haven't emptied my recycle bin yet. Is there a way of retrieving the files and reset up the account?

HELP!??!!? :)

Deleted from where? If you deleted from the hard drive, the folders would still be in Recycle bin, but if somehow deleted from the program, you can recreate the account, and, then, with NS closed, copy the most important files and the subfolders, and paste them into the new folder. Files like Inbox or Sent should be renamed, because they would overwrite the new files. The new effct is that you would have folders with the old mail. You can always move individual messages to the new, and active file.
But, I can't quite visualize what you did.

I deleted the account from the Netscape Mail program

Postby topgun21 » Wed 22 Jun, 2005 11:33 am

I was attempting to fix an email issue with the account. I wanted to start from a fresh account. So I went into the account settings, and I selected "delete account" and said "yes" when prompted if I was sure. It wasn't my computer but a friend of mine. I didn't realize he had a bunch of folders in the account with old emails and such stored in them. So know he'd like them back.

You are ok, but you will have to spend some time getting things back in order. It may not be so difficult, but I never had the occasion of trying this after several hours or days. All you information is still on the hard drive, and you profile had a Mail folder, located in different places depending on the operating system. If you know that WinXP hides the files/folder, fine. Otherwise see how my link applies.
If you want to put back the same account, you will have to add it again using the wizard. But, it seems to me that all you wanted were the folders, and they are there on your hard drive. You will have to copy files like Inbox, Sent, with no extention, to another simalar product, or just put the files on a CD. It depends on what you want to do.

Are the old emails and things that my friend had stored in those sub folders lost? Or will the be within that hidden folder system? Because ultimately he'd like to have his old emails back.

What you see in the program are nothing but links to the files stored on the hard drive. So, nothing is lost, other than the link.
If your friend uses WinXP, the files will be in the hidden folder, but the link I gave before tell you how to find them.
I am at loss understanding what you want. If you wanted to remove the account from your program, you succeeded. I you wanted to preserve the contents, you have. Then only thing is what's next. If it is something in the future, just wait.

ok I found the hidden files and folders the program uses, but which folder holds my friends old emails? The ones from the deleted account. Is there a files that contains all the old emails that I can reimport back into netscape mail?

Steve,

If the Mail Account you deleted is in the Recycle Bin, then have you tried the "Restore" feature? If you do this, then that's all that is necessary. The files will be replaced in their original folders.

I don't mean to sound like an idiot hear Ramona (too late I think :)

But do you mean the Windows System Restore? Or is there a Restore in Netscape?

Steve,

If the files are in the Recycle Bin, then with Netscape closed:

Open the Recycle Bin, highlight the appropriate files
Right click the highlighted files
Select: Restore

Then the files will be returned to their original folders.

I would never think you were an idiot, just in "learning mode".

Just to get things straight,
Did you use the Remove Account button in the Netscape 7.2 Mail and Newsgroup Account Settings window?
Then you added back the same account?

When you recreate the same account, a new MAIL\ "mailserver" subfolder is created in the profile, and the name of the new folder has the same name as the original, but with a number added. That new folder is now holding the Netscape Mail. It's called the "Local Directory" in the account settings, server settings window.

All you need to do is use the "Browse" button at the bottom of the Server Settings window for the mail account, next to Local Directory , and select the original folder. For example, you might see a pop.MyISP.net folder and a pop.MyISP-1.net folder. If Netscape is currently using the pop.MyISP-1.net folder, select the pop.MyISP.net folder in the "Browse" window. After restarting Netscape the original mail should appear.

Hope that helps. Details here:

Steve, I did miss the above info, so if you did removed the account in Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings, your friend's Mail is still on the HDD. Just follow the directions on the above referenced page: Lost Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings •• Profile.

Let us know if you need further help.
