question on mac decompressing/extract PC files?

i wanted to download i believe compressed files like .zip or.rar or seomthing..however they are PC files. and is there a way i can decompress them on my mac and use them? i already tried stuffit expander but when i tried to expand it, there was an error message saying that the file didn't seem to be compressed and to try opeining it up with microsoft. so i said okay to try and when it opened it there was all these funky characters. so obviously that didn't work. is there just no way to download it?

To decompress/extract files like .zip, .gz is easy, you can do that with Mac OS X's built-in features. If the content is like text or video/music file, you should be able to use it. If the content is an application (for Windows), you will need to run Windows (under Virtual PC or similar) to use such file.
